  • 11-6-15. There were some interesting birds along the north end of the dry lakebed of Indian Valley Reservoir this morning. Near the NE corner of what used to be the lake, Bartlett Springs Road is a rocky levee with dry lakebed on both sides of the road. What little that remains of the lake is several miles to the south. Along the levee road Mary Beth Woodward and I saw a LOGGERHEAD...

  • 10-16-15. Jon Dunn and several other birders found a Chestnut-sided Warbler in Rodman Slough Park early this afternoon. The park is located on the Nice-Lucerne Cutoff at the western edge of the bridge. They saw the bird in oaks near both the southern and northern edges of the small parking lot. Thanks to a rapid relay call from Jerry White, I was able to refind the bird near 1:15...

  • 6/28/15 There were unusual numbers of shorebirds at the outlet of Kelsey Creek in Clear Lake State Park this morning. This was my first trip out there this year. It is VERY difficult to get there because Clear Lake is still high. I wore waist high waders. There was a flock of 64 Willets that circled numerous times and eventually landed where I counted them. They were soon joined by...

  • 2/27/15 Yesterday morning and early afternoon (2/26/15) I birded the north shore of Clear Lake. At Lucerne Harbor there was a first cycle Mew Gull among many Ring-billed Gulls. This is a continuing bird first found by Jerry White on Feb. 19. Further east near Hwy 20 mile marker 20.81 there was an adult male Red-breasted Merganser in breeding plumage and an adult male Barrow's...

  • 1/30/15 I was surprised this morning to find two Evening Grosbeaks in my yard in southwest Lakeport. I had my brother Stan Woodward keep the birds in view while I went back to the house for a camera. I was able to get one good photo before the birds flew off. The habitat is mixed blue and Calif. white oak woodland. A new yard bird and a great way to start the day. Dave Woodward...

  • Jan. 8, 2015 There is a male Phainopepla visible in a row of cottonwoods and willows along the south-facing edge of the defunct Willow Tree Resort campground at the end of C-St. in downtown Lakeport. The bird was found by Jamie Scott on Jan. 6 and was still there this morning. I have not previously seen the species in Lakeport. The only public property for viewing the bird is C St...

  • Nov 15, 2014 This morning Mary Beth Woodward and I found a Loggerhead Shrike on Loconomi Rd near Middletown. After turning off of Butts Canyon Rd onto Loconomi Rd the first house on the right is white with a row of willows along one side. The shrike used several perches between Butts Canyon Rd and the white house. Later we saw a Ferruginous Hawk near the windmill in High Valley...
