Godwit Days Birds
- Birders one and all,
Godwit Days is going well and the birds have cooperated as well as the weather. Highlights include:
Birds; Laysan Albatross and likely Murphy's Petrel (Solanders couldn't be ruled out) courtesy of Tristan McKee and Steve Tucker on the pelagic trip. Calliope Hummingbird at Gary Friedrichsen's yard, "guest-listed" by Kenn Kaufman. Bald Eagle, Evening Grosbeaks, Golden Eagle, Lesser Yellowlegs, Short-eared Owl, Spotted Owl, and more to come with another days events tomorrow. Common Grackle remains in Del Norte. Alan Baron will lead a trip north that leaves the community center at 0800 Sunday morning.
Presentations; Kenn's keynote and respect for chickadees, also the look back at the '70s with Humboldt County veterans, very inspiring.
Birders; Well over 250 registered, community center full of patrons and gorgeous birds of prey. One third of all 85 trips completely sold out! Post-festival trips to Mendocino, Tule Lake and around Humboldt Mon-Weds space still available.
Vendors; Best option to try a wide variety of optics from Bruntom, Swarovski, Eagle Optics and Pentax. Not everyday on the north coast can you compare shop like this. Would probably have to wait for Godwit 2004. Also magnificent display of wildlife art, many fine originals for sale - first come first served.
Still going tomorrow with trips now half price for registered guests and only trip cost (no registration required) to new attendees. Come on down, still room on the big day bus with Kenn and Ron, many other trips and an added presentation by Dave Thompson from Ireland on the Irish Brent at 3:00 pm.
See you at the Arcata Community Center across from Healthsport - walk into the world of birds and birding.
