8 April 2010 - The Mendocino County Bird Records Committee reviewed the 5
December 2009 sighting of a female
Williamson's Sapsucker at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens by Dave
Jensen & Tim Bray, et al. Even though the observation only lasted for
10 to 15 minutes, and the bird could not be relocated in following days,
both Dave and Tim provided good detail notes and drawings
to solicit a unanimous 6 ACCEPT votes from the review committee. This
establishes Mendocino County's (MEN's) second record.
The first record was also a female and was collected in 1905 by a Mr.
Herbert in 1905 on Albion Ridge. The study skin now resides in the
vertebrate collection at CalAcademy of Sciences - Accession Number 1860 SU
Number SU 12623.
Again, congrats to Dave and Jim for "being out there", for a bit of luck,
and for good birding observation and documenting skills!
Good birding. Bob Keiffer
