- Hello, Seabirders,
Dust off your boots and jackets and get ready for the seabird season!
Shearwater Journeys will be offering 32 pelagic trips, beginning July
27th and continuing until October 20th. This is the single most
exhaustive offering of dedicated seabird trips on the west coast. This
year, we begin our 32nd year of trips from Monterey, 27th year from
Bodega Bay, and 8th year from Fort Bragg. We welcome beginner
seabirders, as well as those looking to add to their county lists or
those looking for the mega-rarities. Our leaders have decades of
unmatched, worldwide seabird experienceand, it shows by the records
that we have documented for North America and California.
The latest seabird reports from Cordell Bank and Bodega Canyon include
flocks of 40-60 Black-footed Albatrosses only 8-10 miles offshore,
numbers of Ashy Storm-Petrels, a few Wilson's Storm-Petrels and, of
course, Pink-footed, Sooty, and a few Buller's Shearwaters. Ten
Black-footed Albatrosses were radio-tagged at Cordell Bank last week.
Late July trips can be excellent for rarities. In past years,
Shearwater Journeys' trips have found Shy Albatross (Bodega Canyon) and
Bulwer's Petrel (Monterey Bay). We are offering an entire set of trips
from the northern coastFort Bragg and Bodega Bay in early August.
These trips have a good track record for finding Hawaiian Petrels.
Naturally, rare seabirds are not found on every trip, otherwise, they
would not be rare! So, we do hope that you will join us on one or more
of our trips this season. Who knows what will show up?
Upcoming trips include: July 27 from Monterey with Jennifer Green, Mike
Danzenbaker, and David Vander Pluym as leaders. July 29 from Fort Bragg
and July 31 from Bodega Bay with Scott Terrill, Linda Terrill, Lisa
Hug, Jon Dunn, David Vander Pluym, Don Doolittle, and Debra Shearwater
leading on both trips. Spaces are available on all of these July trips.
