Just got this message from a friend of mine who is on the Fish & Game commission in Sonoma. Would anyone know of a person who works with and bands wood ducks in the Willits area. Someone that may know about the duck mentioned below?
      Thanks for your help!

      Cathy,

I got the following from one of my fellow Fish & Wildlife Commissioner and I thought you'd be interested.

Subject: BIRDS: Banded Wood duck road kill found in Camp Meeker born inWillets!

      Hey ya'll,

Thought some would find this of interest?

David Berman found a road kill male wood duck on Bohemian Hwy on 3/22/05. It had a North American Bird Banding Program leg band on it, so I called in the number and data and just received back the original banding data of when & where it was banded.

The report said that the bird "was too young to fly when banded on 8/02/2004 near Willets". It was banded as a juvenile in a nest box near Willets. So, did it over-winter somewhere near Willets and then in early spring migrate south to Dutch Bill to breed?

I have attached the head shot image of this magnificently festooned & still warm male after being on the Darwinian-losing end of colliding with a petroleum propelled vehicle traversing the landscape at a velocity of which most critters are ill adapted.

All very fascinating to me, hope you find it so as well...
      Brock

      Brock,

Did you inquiry include who banded the bird? I have a wildlife rehab friend who lives in Willits and I'd be interested if she might know who and exactly where the bird was banded. Fish & Wildlife Service does not allow wildlife rehabbers to band - such a waste. They would get so much more information if they did. Personally I think the migratory patterns are very fascinating. Just how far some birds go may very well not be as far as thought.

      Thanks,
      Crystal

      Crystal,

      The Bander info says:
      California Waterfowl Association
      Dr. Robert McLandress, Suite 150
      4630 Northgate Blvd
      Sacramento, CA 95834

If you find out something cool, let me know,
      Brock

So do you have any idea where this all took place or do you know who this person is?

      Crystal
