Slideshow/lecture: "Birds of Borneo"
Field Trip: To Gray Lodge Wildlife Area
1) Slide show/Lecture: "Birds of Borneo" Matthew Matthiessen will show slides of his trip to Borneo in June of 2004. The slideshow will feature large colorful hornbills, trogons, and dozens of other birds, as well as orangutans, the largest flower on earth, and nests used in "bird nest soup." Borneo, the third largest island in the world, has 35-40 endemic species of birds. According to fans who have attended his slideshows year after year, Mr. Matthiessen is an excellent photographer and engaging speaker. Thursday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m. at the Grace Hudson Museum, 431 S. Main St., Ukiah. Sponsored by Peregrine Audubon Society.
2) Field Trip to Gray Lodge Wildlife Area in Sacramento Valley, north of Sutter Buttes. Participants on this field trip have regularly seen huge numbers of birds, according to the local Audubon newsletter The Falcon Flyer. Birds mentioned include large birds such as Sandhill Cranes, Tundra Swans, Snow Geese, and White-faced Ibis, as well many species of ducks and other birds. Meet at the northwest corner of Long's Parking lot near Orchard and Perkins in Ukiah at 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 22. Come prepared to drive and/or carpool, and bring gas money in case you ride with someone else. Also bring a lunch, warm clothes, rain gear, and binoculars. For more information call 463-1341.
