Christmas Bird Count and "Pre-Count Meeting" - The Peregrine Audubon Society invites nature enthusiasts to join in Audubon's longest-running wintertime tradition, the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC). The Ukiah Valley CBC will take place on Saturday, December 18, beginning early in the morning. The Count continues for 24 hours, though most birders participate for anywhere from 1 to 8 hours, depending on their schedules, their stamina, and the weather. At the end of the day participants share a potluck "compilation dinner" to celebrate another successful Count and to hear the results of the day's effort. The compilation dinner takes place at 6 p.m. at the Grace Hudson Museum Public Room.
All who wish to join the Christmas Bird Count should come to a pre-Count meeting this Thursday, December 9, at the Grace Hudson Museum at 7 p.m., 431 S. Main St., Ukiah. That meeting will include a slideshow/refresher on identification of local birds, and will also be your opportunity to sign up for a team. Teams will be led by experienced birders, and each team will cover a designated area in Ukiah Valley. (All are welcome to come to the slideshow, whether or not you wish to participate in the Count). If you absolutely cannot come to the meeting, call Kate Marianchild to sign up: 463-0839.
