5630Baird's Sandpiper - Virgin Creek Beach
- May 19, 2013Sun, 19 May, 2013 -- This morning, Cheryl Watson found a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER
at Virgin Creek beach. The bird was near the north end of the 'main' beach, north
of the creek but south of the flat, offshore rock (where Harlequin Ducks loaf in the
late fall and winter). It was feeding in almost-dry sand in small piles of kelp and
driftwood. This is very rare for spring (possibly a first spring record for MEN County).
Virgin Creek beach is just north of the Fort Bragg city limits, where are two parking
areas (a large dirt pull out and an unmarked State Park entrance a little further north).
