If the power light is off on the front control panel, you likely have bad
components (caps and VR) on the front control panel circuit board.

Yep....those are good ones. I would not worry with internal batteries; they
rarely put out 10.5 volts even when brand new. Sounds like your control panel
                  PCB has blown.

I actualy tried a new set of batteries in the scope ,when it wouldn’t come on
with the power supply. I have Astron 20 amp non switching power supply and a
Astron 25 amp switching supply. I use both of these as supplys for my ham

"Good" does not mean that they may not vary in output or spike in voltage. What
                  brand and are they regulated?
If the power light is off on the front control panel, you likely have bad
components (caps and VR) on the front control panel circuit board.

No chance if the front control panel light is not coming on.

Is there no possibility it could be the hand box? If so can it be checked on
                      another compatible scope?

Yep....those are good ones. I would not worry with internal batteries; they
rarely put out 10.5 volts even when brand new. Sounds like your control panel
                      PCB has blown.

I actualy tried a new set of batteries in the scope ,when it wouldn’t come on
with the power supply. I have Astron 20 amp non switching power supply and a
Astron 25 amp switching supply. I use both of these as supplys for my ham
                      radios.

"Good" does not mean that they may not vary in output or spike in voltage. What
                      brand and are they regulated?
If the power light is off on the front control panel, you likely have bad
components (caps and VR) on the front control panel circuit board.

I'd try a couple of things before shipping it (especially if you're an electronics hobbyist, as many ham are):
                        (a) immediately after turning it on, tap 999 on the keypad.
If it's (primarily) a firmware issue, the handbox may display "FlashLoad" and then "Downloading... do not turn off"
(don't worry... you CAN then turn it off)
If that happens, it's quite possible that a firmware reload WILL fix it.
                        BUT: it's possibly/probably:
                        (b) something's wrong with the scope's internal power. IT could be a cold solder joint that let go, or a cracked trace, but most likely it's a bad capacitor (or voltage regulator) on the main board.
A "quick fix" would be to pull the main board and *carefully* inspect it for copper trace damage, and perhaps replace the electrolytic capacitors near the voltage regulators.
The full schematics are in the Files area of the LX200GPS group
                        http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/LX200GPS/files

You can test for (b) by measuring the 5v lines on the main board.
                        They should *be* 5v.

                        good luck

Defintely not the manufacturer s power supply; the Meade AC converter many times spikes to over 24 volts.....that very well may be the cause of the failure.

before you send the scope to meade, plug the scope into a wall outlet via
the 12V converter supplied by the manufacturer.

You would be far better off simply getting one of the very well regulated
power sources from www.scopestuff.com , which I have tested throughout their
availability; they are remarkably steady and far more affordable than other
                                alternatives.

Is there a good DC to DC voltage regulator that could be put in line
with a Meade AC to DC converter?

Thanks to all for the ideas. I Pulled the front panel and did a cursory inspection at first but ,saw nothing obvious. I will certainly pull the board again and do a check hopefully one of these ideas will bare fruit. Do any of you know of a easy way to place the front panel back in ? I have had it out twice,
and it was a real pain to get it back in without damaging it
                                      thx

I'm note sure how similar the GPS is to the LX200 classic, but it would
be very worth while doing some basic checks in the power panel.

One the classic, C2 often goes pop and causes problems, another user (I

on the front panel had fractured.

Then you can remove the base cover plate... having a hand "inside" helps immensely with removing/replacing the main board.

                                          good luck

You need to remove the panel with the scope laying on its side so that you
can manipulate the cabling from both the underside of the base as well as
the front....trying to remove and manage from just the front is simply not
worth the time saved, as damage can easily occur. The newer panels do NOT
fit easily into the front opening and need to be gently angled into place.

Mine comes out easily, you just have to be a little careful not to let it
catch on anything. (this on on a classic, not the GPS version)

The large ribbon cable and connector is often the main culprit

Never do this (standing on the front cell) with the 8" telescope.....the
secondary mirror holder actually makes contact with the dust cover and the
pressure can easily shatter the corrector plate. This is particularly true
if the collimation screws have been replaced with collimation knobs. If
knobs are installed on some of the newer 10" scopes, they too can protrude
past the plane of the dust cover and should never be placed on the front
                                              cell.

I lay the scope on a padded surface, and some people stand it on the
                                              corrector cover.
                                              See http://rseymour.home.wolfenet.com/LX200guts.html
Then you can remove the base cover plate... having a hand "inside" helps
immensely with removing/replacing the main board.

                                              good luck

Thanks to all for the ideas . After checking the boards I found that short exists on the 5v circuit I cannot find where. Guess it is back to Meade for Repair.

The old dud cap problem would be the first thing to check A short there
will kill the power, but that would normally be a short on the 18V side,
not the 5V side. The result would be no 5V power.

Guess it is back to Meade for Repair. Anyone who has had experience with Meades repair service maybe you could advise me,on what to expect.
