      Bad timing for board absences

Dover board member William Buckingham is needed at the table as the
      district copes with controversy.

      Thursday, December 30, 2004

Board member needed: Won't you come home, Bill Buckingham, won't you
      come home?

Of all the times to miss several school board meetings, this is
      definitely not it.

Dover Area School Board member William Buckingham, a driving force
behind the board's controversial decision to teach intelligent design in
high school biology classes, has been absent from all three meetings
      this month.

Now lawsuits have been filed, the board recently met to approve a firm
to defend the district in the case, but the person who started the ball
rolling hasn't been there to participate in these crucial decisions.

Former board member Jeff Brown asked the right question: "Where is this
guy? Why isn't he around to sort of help sort it all out?"

Some have said he had a family emergency but would be back by the end of
      the month.

Let's hope so. We wish him the best in dealing with any emergency, but
these are signal events in the history of this district.

The eyes of the nation will be upon us.

Mr. Buckingham needs to be there to take responsibility for the course
he has set the district upon.
