Climate in New Mexico? A friend of mine is looking for advice.
- OK, this is a bit of an odd question, but I thought somebody here
could advise me. I have a friend, C., a single straight lady who is
planning to retire to rural New Mexico. She has been pretty active in
gay rights in Massachusetts, and wants to continue that after she
moves. Another friend of hers, S., is convinced that people there
will think she's a lesbian and she'll become a victim of a hate crime.
S. thinks that C. should not subscribe to a gay rights magazine in
New Mexico. (S. also didn't want to travel with C. to New Mexico to
help her look at property because she thought people would think they
were a lesbian couple.) I think S. is being over the top ridiculous,
but I also realize that because I'm married it's easier for me to be
out as an ally. I did some googling around and from what I've seen
Santa Fe looks pretty gay-friendly. She'll be living about a hundred
miles from there in a very small town. My experience is that people
in the west tend to be pretty much mind-your-own-business about their
neighbors, compared to other parts of the country. But my experience
isn't the gay experience. Plus I live in a town, not in a rural area.
My own neighbors are very conservative but friendly to me, despite my
liberal bumper stickers, but I don't know what rural New Mexico would
Does anybody have any thoughts on this?
