Bill, thanks for the info.  Here's a little more about us and our plans.
We are  hoping to leave  the Chesapeake around the first or second week of June, depending on the weather  and how our "getting ready to leave" boat jobs go,  needing to return in August. We will be working  at our computer-based jobs remotely from the boat during the week and  doing our best to usweekends to move on or explore whichever we feel like  (and again, depending on the weather) .  We're planning to sail straight up to Block Island and need to figure out where our first stop will be - there's no  Verizon Broadband connectivity at Block Island so  it looks like we'll need to be on the mainland .  We have no  set itinerary other than plans to head up to a family reunion in Casco Bay , ME at the beginning of July.

We pretty much need to stay  between New York City and Gloucester, MA to get the Internet connectivity  we need and thus be able to work . Does that narrow it down it down a bit?

I don't think we'll be staying in any one place long enough to be considered  "live-aboards" (maybe a week or two in any one place at the most) so I'm not too concerned about that.  We would however like to find some places that are conducive to reprovisioning via dinghy, and really any places that are good for anchoring out and dinghying into.  The rest of the time we actually prefer quiet out of the way spots, if  possible.  This will be our first long cruise  up there so we are mainly wanting to actually make the trip up, hang out with family some, and do a little exploring.  We aren't too bothered about the big touristy areas, we know they will be very busy.  Given NOAAs latest hurricane predictions, any info on safe harbors / hurricane holes would also be greatly appreciated.

      Julie

      Hello Julie,

First, I highly recommend you purchase the Atlantic Cruising Club’s Guide to New England book & CD combination.  It’s very reasonably priced and it will more than pay for itself for you over the time you’ll be here.

Also Julie, you say “ New England ” and working while here ..  Those are broad generalities and a wide geographic area, especially by SAILBoat …

Do you have loose itinerary yet? Which months or weeks you hope/plan to be where?

When you say “work”, are you saying you will be working remotely from your boat while traveling?  Or will you be seeking temp work at each destination?

Anchorages, actually I don’t feel there is a shortage of anchorages in New England or the Boston Harbor/Massachusetts Bay area.  I feel most anywhere you might want to go in New England has anchorage area

I don’t recall personally seeing (noticing) many true “live-aboards” in the Boston area.  Live-aboard as in living at anchorages or mooring areas that aren’t associated with a YC or commercial marina.  Julie, I don’t know if that is because it is discouraged by the authorities?  I don’t know of anyone being chassed out of a free anchorage area for staying to along, which you might see along the Florida/south/sun coast where (free) living aboard is more commonly attempted and therefore discouraged.  Or, do we not see (notice) it much around here because it is a challenge to do so.  By challenge in the Boston area I mean 1) a “weather” challenge or 2) A “convenience” challenge.  Weather and convenience challenges as in distance to shore (especially in bad weather) and where to go ashore and be able to park a dinghy for free or inexpensively and be able to shop etc.

I do feel there are ample anchorage areas around Boston and most coastal/harbor towns.  You just might have to move around a bit to not draw attention and get chased away, if that does happen.

Below I list some links and some info from a few of them.  Make sure you look all the way to the bottom.  Most, if not all, of these links you’ll find within the MassBaySailors links area too.

So Julie, again if you can be more specific as to where you hope to be and when we can offer advice directed that way.

      Bill

Notice the $150 SEASONS Pass to Boston Harbor Islands Moorings, there are restrictions to discouraged long-term stays.

To insure objectivity, ACC neither solicits nor accepts marina advertising. ACC's Reviewers and Editors select the marinas to be covered in its Guides and there is absolutely no charge to marinas for inclusion.
".will certainly become the bible for.cruisers. Nearly as indispensable as the boat itself,   the entire series of ACC marina guides is exemplary for its completeness and objectivity. "                                             ...Blue Water Sailing
