Normally the dry pigment/powder is ground with a medium, sometimes oil,
sometimes glue/paste , sometimes soap on a glass or marble slab with a
muller until it is very smooth and becomes a thick paste. some sort of
binder is needed to hold all ther powder together to make a lovely
unctuous paste .This is then diluted with water/oil/spirit . There are
lots of different methods to get the balance right, but the basic
      procedure is much the same.
