Subject: workshop „paste paper in conservation"

(9th – 13th June), centro del bel libro ascona

Historical paste paper techniques as needed for adequate infills and
bindings have not changed fundamentally since the seventeenth
      century.
A multitude of tools, paints, base papers and starches is used,
providing together with the maker's technical skills the almost
indefinite diversity of paste paper. This course will help
participants to understand the fascinating processes, "read" the
originals and produce the required papers. Insights into history,
      chemistry and surfaces are given.
Participants are invited to bring damaged objects and/or their own
      tools and materials.

      Teacher: Susanne Krause
"Paste papers are an everlasting topic in restoration. Being able to
read the original is of high importance. Base papers, tools,
starches, paints and craftmanship are the elements of well-made
paste papers. Participants learn under precise guidance to `play`
these elements and to achieve the needed result. Chemical and
historical information is important and will be incorporated in
      hands-on work.
Getting on top of historical techniques is not only a requirement
for restorers but also a tool for artistical and experimental work."
