Getting attention from the majority has become the norm of the day. Doing any menial job is a great mission. The jobs done by our medical professionals and the police and other welfare sectors and agencies have no comparisons anywhere in other missionary works of the church societies; but not talking about gospel missionary works. The simple, humble austere and frugal life of the present pope life is adorable; this is really a monastic life that others also will have to practice in their private life. There is nothing wrong in this, if it has to done privately. Telecasting it globally and getting honour and adulation is not an exemplary thing, because the left hand should not know what the right hand is doing.
Public and social and religious institutions have certain set rules and laws by which they run their day-to-day affairs. But priesthood has a special role that is accountable to the Divine lawgiver. Jesus washed the feet of His apostles who are the builders of the church, not any other individual's. He didn't invite St.Mary or st.Mark, the owner of the building where He arranged the last supper, from whom He got permission to organize His Passover supper. Priesthood is a special status and authority that forgives the sins of the repenting flock who are to give honour and veneration to the clerical positions, Jn.20, 22-23. Jesus allowed Mary to pour the costly oil and wipe it with her hair, though the apostles, especially Judas, grumbled against her. Jesus said that the poor are always with you, but the devotion she showed would be preached till the end of the age. The pontiffs and prelates can wash anybody's feet and kiss, but it is not equivalent of washing the feet of the apostles, betrayer who kissed and deceived and st.peter who denied Him. Washing somebody's feet for show business can't be considered as a charitable work that has not been precedent for 2, 000 years. Religious prolitarianism that set precedence is considered as a time bomb. No apostles did wash the feet of others, but helped others and fellow workers by doing miracles and support. Celibate clerical authorities doing such things can end up in scandals and gossips, St.James, 1, 27. Even otherwise the church has numberless unbearable scandals and compensation claims. Even in the pontiff's pontificate itself there may be other prelates who are against such move that may eventuate in suspicion and jealousy and betrayals. I don't know whether the pope consulted this change with the conclave and others.
The Roman pontificate has taken a different route since 1978 in their faith and sacramental and administrative changes because one pope died after 33 days after the enthronement. It spread many uncongenial rumours of his final end, so also the previous pope's butler who was interrogated and charged for leaking the Vatican secrets. Most of the sex scandals and faith negativity began since the liberalization because women and children have given prominence at the Altar and church affairs. Liberalization and liberalization theology and localization, for example Indianisation, broke the backbone of the Catholic Church, consequently also other churches who follow the big brother. In order to embrace the whole world they gave concessions that people from different religions can get salvation by worshipping God in their own way and faith, which is against the Lord's commission, Mt.28. Despite showing such magnanimity the pope was yet shot by a religious fanatic.
Washing the feet as a symbol of the sacrament of confession
The High-priestly sermon and washing the feet is seemingly the herald of the sacrament of confession by a sinless role model before taking part in the holy institution is a lesson taught by Christ. Mk.13&Lk.22. The main things they had to confess were the internal feuding to become the chief among the apostles and betrayal of Jesus to the religious hierarchy. Jesus prayed and chastised for St.Peter's overweening ambition of overruling the apostles. He gave the signal to them that one of them would betray, but all the apostles confessed their loyalty. But Jesus admonished that it would be Judas who would take the cudgel against Him. After the institution of the sacrament He said His apostles only exclusively to love one another, Mk.13, 34-35, not to the world, Mt.5, 21-26, though it is imperative to love our enemies, too, in the universal sense. But the confession before taking the Holy Mysteries pertain to the people against whom we have sinned against in our daily traffic of association or socialization. Hence there is no relevance to wash the feet or give a body wash to those who are in market places or public places, rather it becomes a mockery to Jesus who prepared the builders of the church to be clean and pure mentally, though washing outwardly for our inward grace.
Since today's minority clergy has corrupted, taking fast track route to gain individual attention and add the number of sheep from other churches and religions is not a spiritual step. The pigmy churches that require their survival will copy such ventures in order to keep their flock under their fist and set a precedence, forgetting that the church is apostolic, Episcopal and evangelical.
These corruptions and changes give a green signal for the birth pang of a new age, which is not far off.
