Reminder:  Legal Observers Needed to Document Madison Nazi Rally

The National Lawyers Guild UW Chapter and the ACLU-UW chapter are recruiting a team of volunteers to help protect first amendment rights. On Saturday, August 26 the National Socialist Movement, a Nazi-affiliated organization, will hold a rally on the State Street corner of the Capitol square. Demonstrators are expected to hold a counter-demonstration on site. Legal observers are needed to be trained and observe the demonstration. They have two objectives: to prevent potential First Amendment violations through their presence which reminds authorities that someone is watching, and to document any violations of civil liberties that do occur.

      Legal Observer Training

      Wednesday, August 23

      6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

      UW Law School, Room 2260

The public is welcome to attend the free training to learn more about the basic rights of protesters and the role of the legal observer.

Volunteers who are interested in being legal observers will attend this training to learn about the rights of protesters and how to document violations of protesters' rights. The training is required for anyone to be a legal observer and volunteers should be prepared to be available on Saturday, August 26 in Madison from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (unless the rally ends early). Materials for the training and for legal observing will be provided.

If you are interested in future opportunities to be trained as a legal observer but are not able to attend this meeting, please email Rachel Graham at ragraham@... for the National Lawyers Guild UW Chapter or Rob Phansalkar at rob146161@... for the ACLU-UW chapter.
