      Dear friends,

The future of fair housing work in Wisconsin is at risk, and we need your
help NOW! Next week, the House of Representatives and the Senate will each
vote on the HUD appropriations bill for FY14, including the Fair Housing
Initiatives Program (FHIP). FHIP, a HUD-administered grant program,
provides the only federal funding available for private non-profit fair
housing organizations to carry out fair housing enforcement and education.

The current House bill severely under-funds critical housing and community
development programs, and if passed would cut FHIP funding by 24% to $32.2
million! This would have a terrible impact on fair housing services
      available right here, in Wisconsin.

Fortunately, the Senate bill would increase FHIP to the President’s
requested level of $44.1 million up from $42.5 million in FY13.

Both the House and the Senate need to hear from you!

What to do? CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS TODAY, and tell
them to support HUD’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) at $44.1
      million.

      1. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE: Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202)
224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Representative’s office. Ask to
speak to the staffer who handles appropriations on matters related to HUD.
If you are sent to voicemail, please leave a message. Ask that your
Representative vote against and speak against the T-HUD bill and publicly
support the FHIP funding level of $44.1 million outlined in the Senate
T-HUD bill. Remind them that FHIP provides unique and vital services to
the public and the housing industry, and that HUD relies on FHIP-funded
local fair housing organizations to help educate the public about their
fair housing rights and to investigate complaints of housing
discrimination. Without this FHIP-funded work, enforcement of the federal
Fair Housing Act would be weakened dramatically.

      2. CALL YOUR SENATOR: Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121
and ask to be connected to your Senator’s office. Ask to speak to the
staffer who handles appropriations. If you are sent to voicemail, please
leave a detailed message. Ask your Senator to vote for the full $44.1
million level for FHIP. Remind them that FHIP provides unique and vital
services to the public and the housing industry, and that HUD relies on
FHIP-funded local fair housing organizations to help educate the public
about their fair housing rights and to investigate complaints of housing
discrimination. Without this FHIP-funded work, enforcement of the federal
Fair Housing Act would be weakened dramatically.

      Dear [Name]:

I am writing to support funding for HUD’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program
(FHIP) at $44.1 million, matching the level passed by the Senate
      Appropriations Committee.

FHIP is a cost-effective federal grant program administered by HUD that
helps fair housing organizations throughout the country conduct critical
civil rights education and enforcement. It is critical that FHIP be
funded at the Senate Committee level of $44.1 million.

In Wisconsin, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council and its
satellite offices, the Fair Housing Center of Greater Madison and the Fair
Housing Center of Northeast Wisconsin, use FHIP funds to help victims of
illegal housing discrimination protect their rights. The Fair Housing
Council also uses FHIP funds to educate housing consumers and providers
about their fair housing rights and responsibilities. Without $44.1
million for FHIP, this highly successful organization and others like it
across the U.S. will be severely limited in their ability to fight for
fair housing choice for hard working and struggling families.

      Thank you for your support.

      Sincerely,

      [Self]

Thank you for your support and your action.
