HI Annette. You saw Droxy and my Snape at Leakycon in Boston.

I haven't gone as far with the makeup or contacts (a phobia prevents that). You may want to consider that the cost to buy all the materials and sewing it yourself will cost you less than having someone make it for you. The cost of materials could come close to $200 and would probably charge you as much to make it.

My Snape jacket and pants are black microfiber suede (microsuede) so it has a flat-black look without the twill knit texture that the gaberdine has. I used thirteen buttons down the front of the jacket, that includes the 2 on the collar (I forgot to take into account the weight of the buttons so my collar falls over and the stays I added afterwards are not enough to keep it up. More interfacing and stays needed). 9 buttons on the sleeves. I used 4 buttons for the pants fly instead of dealing with a zipper, but didn't do the buttons at the bottom of the legs (refer to Sorcerer's Stone Quidditch scene where Hermione gives Snape the hot foot). My pocket flaps were originally sewn on with no real pocket, but i have since made one pocket behind one of the flaps. I don't have a waist seam... the real jacket as seen in the Hi-Res photo link below has an upper half and bottom half.

I used Yvette's Snape Construction site for reference...

I used the same black Silk Noil for the robes, I bought 11-12 yrds of it. Her yoke (the part around the neck on the trapezius of the shoulder) is more authentic to the movie, but mine was more square. The noil was 45 inches wide, i took two 6-ft lengths sewed them side by side so it was almost 90 inches wide, the cartridge pleated them down to 16 inches wide for the bottom edge of the yoke. I took another length for each side panel and pleated about half of the width on the side then flat the rest of the way. the front was a triangle piece and I didnot make sleeves but left the arm openings open all the way to the bottom. I wound up cutting about foot off the whole bottom cuz I only 5' 5" and it still has some of the bottom on the floor that drags and people sometimes step on it, but when it billows it's beautiful. The price per yard is double what is was in 2007.

This is a great description of how to do cartridge pleats:

But where it shows only the upper U's sewn to the fabric. I did that for the outer layer of the yoke and then sewed the bottom U's to the inside layer of the yoke so it was more secure. It does take some time to do, but using a long ruler and marking every half inch and making sure you go in, out, in, out, in, out with the needle, and all the threading matches, it is SO Worth it.

I had made a silk black ascot/cravat originally. lost it, now where a silk green one.

If you can brighten this picture this is good for the arm openings of the robe and the buttons and pant's fly.

      Good reference for jacket length.

There are some hi-resolution images in the galleries at

Or search for an older post in this yahoogroup regarding snape photos.

And here is the best Hi-res photo.

Nigel (Vladimir Snape) also has a very authentic movie Snape outfit that he had someone make for him. He's taller and looks alot more like Rickman in height and size than I. Look for Dragoncon pics of him.

Fabric... go to stores check some out for color and texture, how it feels. Buy some swatches, either at a store or online. Be aware that some fabric has a nap so you want it laying in the right direction (which way is up?).

Shirt - Simplicity pattern 4219. Pattern B with some modification of the front of the collar.

I took me about 3-4 weeks to put mine together, mostly evenings.

      James
