"E. COLI SCULPTURE HEADS TO OKLAHOMA CITY:" (06/12/12): This E. coli bug won't be getting anyone sick -- it's actually a work of glass by British artist Luke Jerram as part of his "Glass Microbology" series, which he started working on in 2004. E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a bacterium that can cause serious food poisoning in humans. It's been associated with a plethora of food recalls and can be extremely dangerous in some cases, like a recent outbreak that has left one person dead and 14 more sickened. The piece, on display at the Oklahoma City Art Museum from June 14 through September 9, is made of entirely clear glass with delicate strands of flagellum, the tiny hairs on an E. coli cell. Where a normal E. coli cell ranges from two to six micrometers in length, Jerram's cell measures four-and-a-half feet long and one-and-a-half feet wide. According to Jerram's website, the E. coli sculpture is one of his largest and most fragile works.

"NOT MEETING CDC GOALS TO REDUCE SALMONELLA, LISTERIA:" (07/31/12): "... it's not really a surprise that the U.S. is falling short of 2010 goals to reduce instances of salmonella, listeria and campylobacter outbreaks. Such pathogens contribute to roughly 48 million illnesses per year according to government figures. According to the Consumer Federation of America, illnesses from campylobacter, salmonella and listeria have increased as compared to the 2006 - 2008 period... In sum, illnesses from these three pathogens have "remained relatively steady or increased from 2007 through 2011." The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently issued a report that stated that the FDA's food advisory and recall process needs strengthening... The CDC is planning to use the 2010 goals as a metric, with further goals set for 2020. So, we'll see what happens in eight years. In the meantime, here's a list of open cases of food recalls."
"TENS OF THOUSANDS IN UK CARRY MAD COW DISEASE:" (08/12/12): "About 24,000 people in the UK are carrying the agent that can cause the deadly brain condition Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (CJD), twice the number scientists previously estimated. The latest figure is based on a study of 30,000 appendixes removed in operations, which were tested for the presence of the prion, or misfolded protein, that causes the condition, linked with eating infected meat. More than a decade ago ministers assured the public that beef was safe to eat,.. in March 1996, it was announced that a new disease, variant CJD, had been discovered in humans. It had come from eating meat from cows infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a similar disease. BSE became known as mad cow disease, and in humans CJD is characterised by rapidly progressive dementia and death.
However, only a small proportion of people who carried the prion developed the clinical disease. There have been 173 cases of variant CJD in the UK since it was identified in 1996. The number of carriers of the prion is significant because there is a theoretical risk they could spread the disease through blood transfusions or surgical instruments. Tough measures are in place to minimise these risks. The Health Protection Agency, which published the new figures, said one in 2000 of the adult population of Britain were carriers of the condition."
"SEAFOOD FROM ASIA RAISED ON PIG WASTE, SAYS NEWS REPORT:" (10/17/12): "... Seafood raised on pig feces and crawling with flies is being sold to U.S. consumers, according to a new report. The November issue of Bloomberg Markets magazine, in a piece on food poisoning and safety, says that it is common practice in some parts of Asia to feed fish pig waste. It describes, for example, the sanitary conditions at a fish factory on the southern coast of Vietnam. "Flies," it says, "crawl over baskets of processed shrimp."
The shrimp at some plants are packed in ice. That's good. What's bad: it's ice made from water often found to be contaminated with bacteria and unfit for human consumption, say Bloomberg's reporters in Hanoi. Vietnam ships 100 million pounds of shrimp a year to the U.S., about 8 percent of the shrimp sold in America... Outside Hong Kong, at a tilapia farm, fish are fed a diet that includes pig and geese feces. That practice, Michael Doyle tells Bloomberg Markets, is unsafe for U.S. consumers, because the manure may be contaminated with salmonella. Doyle is director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia. Fish farmers, he says, use fecal matter as a cheaper alternative to commercial fish food.
The FDA inspects food shipments to the United States, including seafood shipments, but the agency's resources are limited, says Bloomberg's report..."
"BRAIN-EATING CROWS MAY HELP SPREAD PRION DISEASES:" (10/18/12): "Prionsthe infectious proteins that cause illnesses such as mad cow disease, scrapie, chronic wasting disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseasecan pass through the digestive systems of crows, new research published in PLoS One finds. The crows are unharmed during the process, and scientists suspect that the birds may play a part in transmitting prion diseases from one location to another, one animal (or, eventually, human) to the next.
To make this discovery, the researchers fed crows prion-infected mice brains. When the crows excreted the digested brains around four hours later, the prions emerged without any damage. The researchers then injected healthy mice with prions recovered from the crows' droppings, and those mice showed signs of prion disease... Other studies suggest that insects, poultry and other scavengers may passively carry prions without showing any disease symptoms themselves. But this study is the first to demonstrate that those consumed prions can retain their ability to cause disease even after being digested..."
"COULD MILK GET YOU MAD COW DISEASE?:" (10/29/12): "Chronic wasting disease, a brain wasting disease in deer was confirmed on Oct. 8 in a captive 3.5-year old doe that died on Oct 4. The deer was kept in a facility in New Oxford, Adams county in Pennsylvania. The case has prompted the Pennsylvania Game Commission to run a check station in counties of concern to contain the case of chronic wasting disease, which is known to spread through the animals' saliva, urine and faces. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is fatal in deer, elk, and moose and the infectious agents commonly called prions can survive in soil for many years.
... Other studies, reported below suggest that even meat and milk commonly believed to be safe to eat or drink may pose a risk. Milk from cows with mad cow disease may spread the disease?... A study in Journal of Virology reported by C. Ligios of Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sardegna in Sassari, Italy and colleagues suggests that prions can get into milk and drinkers may get infected by drinking milk from infectious animals and develop brain wasting disease like chronic wasting disease in deer, scrapie in sheep, variant Creutzfeldt-Jokob Disease in humans, and mad cow disease in cows... Prions are extremely stable. The pasteurization process applied for sterilization of milk could in no way kill infectious prions. It has been known that eating meat from cows infected with mad cow disease can cause human version of mad cow disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jokob Disease.

"COULD FARMED FISH SPREAD PRIONS THAT CAUSE MAD COW DISEASE?:" (11/02/12): "Fish provides omega-3 fatty acids which may potentially help prevent dementia like Alzheimer's disease or relieve symptoms of the disease. But some researchers show concerned about the safety of farmed fish because the fish may acquire infectious prions from cows with mad cow disease or bovine spongiform encephalopathy and humans who eat the infected fish may contract human version of mad cow disease called variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease. Robert P. Friedland of Department of Neurology, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, KY, USA and colleagues published a report in Journal of Alzheimer's Disease to express the concern... The researchers said in their report "We are concerned that consumption of farmed fish may provide a means of transmission of infectious prions from cows with bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans, causing variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease."... Some observers suggest that prions can cause a variety of brain diseases including dementia like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's."
"BEEF TONGUE RECALL FOR MAD COW DISEASE RISK:" (11/11/12): "Black Earth Meat Market Inc., a Black Earth, Wis. establishment, is recalling approximately 99 pounds of beef tongue products because they may not have had the tonsils completely removed, which is not compliant with regulations that require the removal of tonsils from cattle of all ages, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday. .. The problem was discovered during a routine Food Safety Assessment at the establishment. Tonsils are considered a specified risk material (SRM) and must be removed from cattle of all ages in accordance with FSIS regulations. SRMs are tissues that are known to contain the infective agent in cattle infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), also known as "Mad Cow Disease," as well as materials that are closely associated with these potentially infective tissues. Therefore, FSIS prohibits SRMs from use as human food to minimize potential human exposure to the BSE agent. There is no indication that any of the cattle slaughtered displayed any signs of BSE..."

"TOO BIG TO CHUG: HOW OUR SODAS GOT SO HUGE:" (06/25/12): "When McDonald's execs first struck up their lucrative business partnership with the Coca-Cola Company in 1955, they were thinking smallliterally. At the time, the only size of the beverage available for purchase was a measly 7-ounce cup. But by 1994, America's classic burger joint was offering a fountain drink size six times bigger... And that's not even the worst of it. Franchises like 7-Eleven, Arco, and the unfortunately named Midwestern chain Kum & Go have all offered drinks upwards of 85 ounces. (To put this in perspective, this is around three times the capacity of a normal human stomach.)... Here's a look at how super sizes became the status quo... ... May 2012: Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, proposes a ban on sugary drinks exceeding 16 ounces. Days later, the Center for Consumer Freedom, a nonprofit backed by the fast-food industry, buys a full page ad in the Sunday New York Times: "New Yorkers need a Mayor, not a Nanny."

September 2012: A second group, heavily bankrolled by the food and beverage industry, says it has collected some 240,000 pledges of support for its campaign to defeat Bloomberg's proposed ban on oversize sodas. Nevertheless, the New York City board of health votes 8-0 (with one abstention) to uphold it. "NYC's new sugary drink policy is the single biggest step any gov't has taken to curb obesity," Bloomberg tweeted after the vote. "It will help save lives."

When asked about the commonly held idea that ancient people were primarily meat-eaters, the highly respected anthropologist, Nathanial Dominy, PhD, from Dartmouth College responded, "That's a myth. Hunter-gathers, the majority of their calories come from plant foods
meat is just too unpredictable." After studying the bones, teeth, and genetics of primates for his entire career as a biological anthropologist, Dr. Dominy, states, "Humans might be more appropriately described as `starchivores....'"

"INFOGRAPHIC: HOW AMERICA'S SERVING SIZES MAKE US FAT AND WASTEFUL:" (08/24/12): "It's no secret that Americans are engaged in a life-and-death battle with our own waistlines. And while the reasons behind our obesity crisis are many, one of the biggest factors is that we just eat too much. Over the last few decades, our serving sizes have balloonedsomething that's evidenced when they're compared to the portions that individuals in other nations eat. And when our servings are so big that we still can't eat it all, we throw it out... Our giant serving sizes are also a contributing factor to America's horrifying problem of food waste. According to a report out yesterday, we waste nearly half our foodmost of which ends up in landfills. And much of that waste is generated because there's just too much of everything. Cutting the size of packages and plates is a big step toward helping curb that. Smaller serving sizes would also help cut down on waste in other ways; in the U.S., hundreds of thousands of tons of paper napkins, take-out cartons, and plastic utensils are thrown out each year.

"HOW DID MY PROFESSION'S CONFERENCE GET HIJACKED BY BIG FOOD?:" (10/15/12): "... The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) hosted its 2012 Food & Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) earlier this month. Sadly, the event once again (see last year's report) demonstrated how this registered dietitians' accrediting organization drags its own credential through the mud by prioritizing Big Food's corporate interests over sound nutrition and public health... Academy "partners," which enjoy top sponsorship status at the expo, included the National Dairy Council, Coca-Cola, and the Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition (yes, the chocolate company). Event "premier sponsors" included General Mills, PepsiCo, and Mars. As a dietitian, I am embarrassed that the nation's largest nutrition trade organization maintains partnerships with companies that contribute to our nation's diet-related health problems.
... On the bright side, there is an emerging subgroup of RDs who are increasingly unhappy with Big Food's ubiquity in the Academy, and who voice their disappointment. The Hunger and Environmental Nutrition dietetic practice group, of which I am a member, concerns itself with issues of corporate control, food justice, environmental regulations, and other "big picture" ideas. This summer, they released their guidelines for responsible corporate sponsorship. They encompass environmental sustainability, humane labor practices, and support of sound public health policy. The Academy leadership would greatly benefit from reading and applying these criteria more broadly..."

"U.S. HEADS FOR WARMEST YEAR RECORDED IN LOWER 48 STATES:" (11/28/12): "The U.S. is about to register the warmest year on record in the lower 48 states, and the world its ninth-hottest, a United Nations agency said in a report, adding new urgency to the quest to control global warming. Two-thirds of the U.S. states suffered drought this year, while heat waves hit across Europe and in Morocco, Jordan, China and Russia, the World Meteorological Organization said in a report released in Doha, where UN climate talks began this week. It noted Arctic sea ice shrank to its smallest on record. "The alarming rate of its melt this year highlighted the far reaching changes taking place on Earth's oceans and biosphere," WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said in a statement. "Climate change is taking place before our eyes and will continue to do so as a result of the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which have risen constantly and again reached new records."
Envoys from 194 nations are working on setting the framework for negotiations on a treaty that would be agreed to in 2015 and come into force in 2020. It would limit fossil fuel emissions, which the WMO earlier this month said reached their highest ever. As delegates met for their third day of discussions scheduled to conclude on Dec. 7, environmental groups joined China, Brazil and 48 of the least developing countries in the world saying industrial nations must make good on their promises for $100 billion a year in aid for developing nations... A separate report today by Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research found sea levels are rising at 3.2 millimeters a year, faster than the 2 millimeters forecast by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007. The new findings highlight that the IPCC is far from being alarmist and in fact in some cases rather underestimates possible risks," said Stefan Rahmstorf, a researcher at the institute.
... The WMO said the winter of 2011 and 2012 was the third warmest in the contiguous U.S. since records began in 1895. It was followed by the warmest spring ever and the joint-warmest summer, alongside 2011, the agency said. Its figures matched data for the first eight months of the year from the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina, on Sept. 10. "Overall, the contiguous United States is expected to have its warmest year on record," the WMO said. In March alone, "the extraordinary warm spell resulted in nearly 15,000 new daily records for high maximum and minimum temperatures across the contiguous United States." Other extreme weather events highlighted by today's report include Hurricane Sandy, which wrought havoc across the Caribbean before hitting the U.S. east coast, flooding the New York subway system and claiming 100 lives."

[For a Special Report on the Doha Conference:
"STANFORD SCIENTISTS SHOCKINGLY RECKLESS ON HEALTH RISK AND ORGANICS:" (09/06/12): "I first heard about a new Stanford "study" downplaying the value of organics when this blog headline cried out from my inbox: "Expensive organic food isn't healthier and no safer than produce grown with pesticides, finds biggest study of its kind." What? Does the actual study say this?
No, but authors of the study -- "Are Organic Foods Safer or Healthier Than Conventional Alternatives? A Systematic Review" -- surely are responsible for its misinterpretation and more. Their study actually reports that ¨Consumption of organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria." The authors' tentative wording -- "may reduce" -- belies their own data...simple prudence should have prevented these scientists from using "evidence" not designed to capture what they wanted to know. Moreover, buried in the Stanford study is this all-critical fact: It includes no long-term studies of people consuming organic compared to chemically produced food: The studies included ranged from just two days to two years. Yet, it is well established that chemical exposure often takes decades to show up, for example, in cancer or neurological disorders... it is reprehensible for the authors of this overview to even leave open to possible interpretation that their compilation of short-term studies can determine anything about the human-health impact of pesticides.
What also disturbs me is that neither in their journal article nor in media interviews do the Stanford authors suggest that concern about "safer and healthier" might extend beyond consumers to the people who grow our food. They have health concerns, too! ...Finally, are organic foods more nutritious? In their report, Crystal Smith-Spangler, MD, and co-authors say only that "published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods." Yet, the most comprehensive meta-analysis comparing organic and non-organic, led by scientist Kirsten Brandt, a Scientist at the Human Nutrition Research Center at the UK's Newcastle University found organic fruits and vegetables, to have on "average 12% higher nutrient levels."...

"ME, GIVE UP MEAT? VEGAN DIETS SURGING IN POPULARITY:" (07/24/12): "Former President Bill Clinton had a legendary appetite... But after having two stents inserted in 2010on top of quadruple bypass surgery six years earlierhe radically changed his diet in the name of saving his health. Now a vegan, the strictest type of vegetarian, he has cut out meat, dairy, eggs, and most oils in favor of a super-low-fat diet that revolves around whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts. It appears to be working: He has said he's dropped more than 20 pounds and has never been healthier. In a televised interview with film producer Harvey Weinstein in June, Clinton explained that he'd decided he wanted to live to be a grandfather. "So I just went all the way. Getting rid of the dairy was great, getting rid of the meat wasI just don't miss it."
Vegan diets have lately been surging in popularity, thanks in part to the example of celebrities who are publicly forswearing all animal products... While many vegans still take the stand because they believe in animal rights, a growing number are swayed by mounting research showing a profound impact on health. "It's dramatic," says Neal Barnard,..president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine... "We've seen people whose chest pain has gone away within weeks, while their weight melts off, blood pressure goes down, and cholesterol plummets." Barnard's 2011 book 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart is a three-week introduction to the case for and how-tos of the vegan life. The panel of 22 experts who analyzed 25 diets for U.S. News's ratings of the best eating plans overallas well as the best for weight loss, heart health, and diabetes management and preventionare not universally sold on absolute meatlessness. But without a doubt, the heavily plant-based plans tend to rise to the top of the U.S. News lists...
... A meatless diet's power against heart disease also is well documented. "It's an exceptionally healthy diet, especially when it comes to cardiac health," says Michael Davidson, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center... In an earlier 12-year study that compared 6,000 vegetarians and vegans with 5,000 meat-eaters, researchers found that vegans had a 57 percent lower risk of ischemic heart diseasereduced heart pumping due to coronary artery disease, which often leads to heart failurethan the meat-eaters. Vegetarians had a 24 percent lower risk."

"WHY US MEAT CONSUMPTION IS FALLING:" (09/10/12): "After a swift rise, meat consumption in the US is now declining faster than anyone would have predicted. Here's why. "Kings of the Carnivores." That's what The Economist called Americans in April when looking at global per capita meat consumption...The amount of meat we eat per person has also steadily increased throughout much of our history, and with that increase, more farm animals have been taken off the land and forced to live in factories. To put it mildly, it hasn't exactly been a good half-century for farm animals. That is until the last five years, when American meat consumption began to take a nose divean unprecedented 12.2 percent drop, to be precise. During that same time period, the US population grew by millions, yet because of this drop in per capita meat consumption, we've been raising and killing several hundred million fewer farm animals each year, amounting to billions of fewer animals enduring inhumane factory farming practices than would be expected given historical trends.
What's Driving the Trend? We needn't wonder about the cause of this drastic drop, since we can ask the experts themselves. CME Groupone of the world's largest derivatives exchanges and owner of the Dow Jones Indexissued its own analysis. CME points to increased feed costs, which raise the price of animal products, and revealingly, they also note: "Add in the efforts of a large number of non-governmental agencies that oppose meat consumption for reasons ranging from the environment to animal rights to social justice and one could conclude that it was amazing that consumption held up as long as it did."... Exactly. People are choosing to eat fewer animals, and not just to save moneyalthough that's a compelling reason. The signs to support this idea are all around us...."

When the milk from a herd of cows is pooled and stored in a holding tank before being pumped into a milk truck and delivered to aprocessor, should that vat of milk have a somat ic cell count (SCC) of 200 (that means that there are 200,000,000 pus cells per liter) fifteen percent of the cows in that herd are infected with mastitis. When the SCC (pus cell count) is 300, then 25 percent of the cows in that herd is infected. Most Americans who drink milk do so by believing it is wholesome. Milk drinkers would shUDDER to think that their milk comes from diseased animals.
In June of 2012, APHIS (USDA's Amimal amd Plant Health Inspection Service) determined that the average number of pus cells from a liter of milk produced in America was 245 million. There are federal statutes called the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO). According to the PMO: "All milk from cows producing abnormal milk should be dumped." How does one define "abnormal" milk? The National Mastitis Council defines abnormal milk: "...Any milk with a cell count over 200,000 cells per milliliter (200 million pus cells per liter) is considered abnormal."
Therefore, the entire American dairy industry is in violation of federal statutes? Would strict adherence to the law put America's dairy industry out of business? Got milk? Got diseased body fluids!"

"ULTRAMARATHON RUNNING: HOW A VEGAN DIET HELPED ME RUN 100 MILES:" (06/12/12): "I run hundred-mile races. I eat only plants and vegetables... There is no more fabled trail footrace in North America than The Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. It attracts the strongest trail runners in the country and offers some of the most punishing terrain... I was a total longshot, an unlikely champion. I was an even more unlikely vegan.. It wasn't just meat. I loved fast food. I grew up in the country, and there were times when we had to shop with food stamps, and I ate government cheese. Restaurants were for birthdays. So being able to buy a burger--or chicken sandwich --whenever I wanted felt like freedom. I started to cut down on meat and to ramp up on fruit and vegetables when I was in physical therapy school, influenced by my reading (especially Andrew Weil, MD and Howard Lyman,.. I learned that the three most common causes of death in our country - heart disease, cancer, and stroke - have all been linked to the standard Western diet, rich in animal products, refined carbohydrates, and processed food.
...So even though I was about to compete in the toughest race of my life, even though I'd be running against men who trained year round in the mountains, and even though I didn't know whether the theoretical benefits of an animal-free diet would translate into a winning time, or if I would have to drop out from exhaustion, I went totally vegan. Five months later, I shot off the starting line and into the lead... I led the entire race, from start to finish. I won that Western States, and the six after, setting a course record along the way. I won the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon, run in 125 degree heat through Death Valley, setting a record there, too. I even raced (and eventually defeated) the greatest member of the legendary Tarahumara Indians in Mexico's Copper Canyons. I won a lot of other races, too, including the 153-mile Spartathlon from Athens to Sparta and the Hardrock 100, the most difficult one hundred mile trail race in the world. My performance wasn't the only thing that improved..."

"TOP SCIENTIFIC MINDS DECLARE THAT WE ARE JUST ONE AMONG MANY ANIMALS:" (08/28/12): "Perhaps measuring animal intelligence by comparing it to human intelligence isn't the best litmus test. As Mark Twain once said, "It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions." But, in the just-released Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness, witnessed by Stephen Hawking, a prominent group of scientists has declared that humans are not unique in ways that matter. Says the panel, "Non-human animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess these [same] neurological substrates [as human beings]." Yes, they stand on their toes or tentacles, snatch their offspring from their arms or their arboreal nests, and they feel the same way about it as would you or I. The question is, how is this knowledge to inform our behavior? After all, shouldn't it?
Of course, hundreds of studies have already demonstrated animals' logical, mathematical, linguistic, and emotional intelligence. For example, for years we blithely believed that humans were the only species to use tools, until researchers documented that wasps were using pebbles as hammers, octopuses were carrying coconut shells as portable hiding places, crows were using sticks to dig in the ground for grubs and many other examples. The mathematical abilities of fish have proved to be on a par with those of monkeys, dolphins and bright young human children...
... animals are conscious beings, capable of understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming abstract thoughts, solving problems, using language, making tools, exhibiting long-term memory, and showing empathy, in many cases with skills that are superior to those of humans. But more importantly, animals can comprehend when they are being abused and killed, and they feel anxiety, fear and pain, just as humans do... It's interesting that one of the definitions of the word "human" is "sympathetic." More and more people are beginning to show that they understand why that is important."

"ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP FLIES DRONE OVER PIGEON SHOOT; HUNTERS SHOOT IT DOWN:" (11/21/12): "SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) flew a remote-control camera over a live pigeon shoot at the Wing Pointe Gun Club in Berks County, Pa. on Sunday, WFMZ reported, and SHARK says one of the rifleman blew the camera to pieces. "Shooting a drone is an extremely dangerous act," SHARK president Steve Hindi states in a press release. "What we were doing is completely legal. Someone at Wing Pointe is obviously so scared of our evidence that they are desperate to stop it." State police have been brought in to investigate the destruction of the drone, which SHARK claims was worth at least $4,000.
"We want to try and find out if the device was shot, who shot it. If we can find that out," Trooper David Beohm told WFMZ. "But then, on the flip side, we want to find out were they allowed to operate this device without a permit or even over the property." SHARK'S release states that the purpose of the camera was to capture footage of "illegal animal abuse." The Humane Society of Berks County also argues that the shoots are illegal. They cite Pennsylvania anti-cruelty law 5511, which reads: A person commits an offense if he wantonly or cruelly ill-treats, overloads, beats, otherwise abuses any animal, or neglects any animal as to which he has a duty of care, whether belonging to himself or otherwise... "The shooting of pigeons in Pennsylvania is unquestionably legal," a release from the DA's office states.
"HURRICANE SANDY: PETS ARE A PRIORITY FOR SOME HIT BY STORM:" (11/13/12): "Entwined with the human costs of the storm, which killed more than 100 people and caused billions of dollars in damage, is another significant toll that of the cherished pets that died or were left behind as families fled for their lives, adding in many cases to feelings of displacement and trauma. Some find it hard to understand why animals are a key concern in disasters engulfing human lives, but owners feel an attachment and responsibility to their pets, said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States. "There's such a strong bond between people and animals that people will put their lives at risk not to leave a pet behind," Dawson said. "So they stay, even when they're told to evacuate, and that puts first responders going back for them at risk."
...In New York City and on Long Island, the ASPCA has rescued more than 300 animals and treated or provided supplies to about 13,000, working with government and private animal welfare agencies, said spokeswoman Emily Schneider. City shelters took in about 400 animals along with their families in the first days after Sandy, Schneider said. There are now more than 100 in shelters with their owners, and a mobile animal medical clinic is cruising decimated neighborhoods in the Rockaway areas of Queens and on Staten Island..."
