      Howdy! Welcome to the 33rd Edition of the Mad Cowboy Newsletter!

      Howard's still on the road since our last issue, and is promising some
      great photographs of his trips (and the Vegan Cruise!) for the next
      installment. However, for this edition, a Sneak Preview for our

      MORE CONFIRMATION MAD COW NOT A 'DOWNER': (02/19/04): "The owner of the
      slaughterhouse that killed the first U.S. cow found with mad cow disease
      has come forward to confirm that the cow was able to walk at the time it
      was killed. Tom Ellestad, who with his family runs Vern's Moses Lake
      Meats, where the sick cow was slaughtered, says the cow could walk at the
      time it was killed and disputed the portrayal of his plant as one that
      mostly handled sick and injured cattle. His claim further throws into
      doubt the insistence of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that the cow
      couldn't walk at the time it was killed, which required that it be tested
      for mad cow disease, as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, a fatal brain
      disease, is commonly known.

      Ellestad's assertion also further backs claims made by one of his workers,
      Dave Louthan, who said he killed the infected animal and has publicly
      insisted it could walk."

      MAD COW HUNT ENDS WITH SOME CATTLE MISSING: (02/10/04): "Spotty U.S.
      records make it impossible to find all the cattle linked to the diseased
      cow: After searching through records of 75,000 cattle in seven weeks, the
      U.S. government on Monday ended its investigation into Washington's mad cow
      case, having identified fewer than half of the 80-plus animals it initially
      set out to discover. The decision... also ends hope that the nation will
      know the fate of all the animals that lived with the sick Holstein on a
      Canadian farm before coming to the United States, where they may still
      graze today."

      HOUSE PANEL QUESTIONS USDA ON MAD COW: (02/18/04): "A House committee is
      challenging the Agriculture Department's view that the nation's first cow
      sick with deadly mad cow disease was lame. The issue is significant
      because Agriculture Department officials that monitor meat plants target
      "downer" cattle animals that are sick, injured or that exhibit symptoms of
      disease for testing of mad cow, a brain-wasting illness. Critics have
      argued that the agency needs also test healthy animals as a safeguard
      against the illness, which can incubate for four or five years.

      Committee chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., and Rep. Henry Waxman, the senior
      Democrat on the committee, questioned the adequacy of the government's mad
      cow testing program. "If the new information is accurate, USDA's
      surveillance system may need to be significantly expanded," they said.
      "The new information also raises questions about USDA's credibility," wrote
      Davis and Waxman, of California. "The American people need to have
      confidence in what USDA reports about the safety of the food supply.""

      MAD COW HAS HOME ON U.S. RANGES: (02/05/04): "Mad cow disease probably
      has been established in North America for more than a decade, and Americans
      should be prepared for the discovery of more domestic cases as it spreads
      through herds. A panel of international experts released these findings
      Wednesday to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, also urging the
      Department of Agriculture to toughen protections put into place following
      the Dec. 23 discovery of an infected Holstein in Washington state. Those
      protections, while helpful, are not sufficient to keep mad cow disease from
      spreading further, or "amplifying," within the North American herd, the
      researchers concluded.

      The panel's assertion that BSE was indigenous to North American herds was
      its most controversial. Although the Washington cow was born in Canada, the
      report warned: "The significance of this BSE (mad cow) case cannot be
      dismissed by considering it 'an imported case.' " "We believe that the
      infection in North America took place at least 10 years ago," Kihm said.
      "You need one cycle before you have a few animals positive, and you don't
      see them in the first cycle. You need a second or a third."

      The findings were presented to a USDA subcommittee appointed by Veneman.
      Some members expressed frustration."

      USDA VETS QUESTION AGENCY'S MAD COW LAB: (02/09/04): "The federal
      laboratory in Ames, Iowa, that conducts all of the nation's tests for mad
      cow disease has a history of producing ambiguous and conflicting results --
      to the point where many federal meat inspectors have lost confidence in it,
      Department of Agriculture veterinarians and a deer rancher told United
      Press International. The veterinarians also claim the facility -- part of
      the USDA and known as the National Veterinary Services Laboratories -- has
      refused to release testing results to them and has been so secretive some
      suspect it is covering up additional mad cow cases.

      The USDA's official stance is that the U.S. beef supply is free of mad cow
      disease, or bovine spongiform encephlopathy, but the veterinarian said,
      "Most agency veterinarians know mad cow is prevalent and epidemic (in U.S.
      herds). We're not talking about one or two cases." "The USDA has such a
      cohesive relationship with industry" that it wants to protect the $70
      billion beef industry more than consumers, the veterinarian said, and noted
      colleagues with whom he is in close contact think the agency's mad cow
      surveillance program "is a laughing matter.""

      DANGEROUS COW PARTS STILL ENTER FOOD SUPPLY: (02/16/04): "Learning that
      those parts are most likely to carry the disease only strengthens the
      aversion. But despite new rules adopted in December to keep the riskiest
      tissues out of the food chain, some of the unsavory ingredients can still
      wind up on the table, hidden behind innocuous labels like "beef flavoring"
      or as accidental contamination in taco filling or processed meat. People
      can get a fatal, human version of the disease by eating tissue from
      infected animals, though no one knows what dose it takes.

      Where do cow brains go? Uses of brain and spinal-cord material: headcheese
      and some processed meats, beef broth, beef flavoring and extract, animal
      and pet food, nutritional supplements. Brains can also be used in
      headcheese and some other processed meat products, as long as they're
      listed on the label. No label is necessary when brains and spinal cords are
      cooked along with other ingredients to make beef broth, beef flavoring and
      beef extracts. It's also still legal to include brains in nutritional
      supplements called "glandulars."

      The only way consumers can find out if the paste is in the food they're
      eating is to ask the producer or restaurant chain. European scientists
      estimated where mad-cow infectiousness resides in a sick cow: brain - 64
      percent, spinal cord - 26 percent, other central-nervous-system tissue -
      6.4 percent, small intestine - 3 percent, eyes and other parts - less than
      1 percent."

      NEW STRAIN OF MAD COW DISEASE IS CLOSER TO HUMAN FORM: (02/18/04):
      "Italian scientists have found a potential second form of mad cow disease
      that more closely resembles the human Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease than does
      the usual cow form of the illness. The brain-wasting diseases BSE, known
      as mad cow disease, and human CJD are caused by different forms of mutant
      proteins called prions. More than 150 people, mainly in Britain, have
      contracted variant CJD, a fatal brain disease believed to be acquired by
      eating meat from BSE-infected cows.

      The Italian researchers report that a study of eight cows with mad cow
      disease found two had brain damage resembling that in the human victims of
      CJD. They said the cows were infected with prions that resembled those
      involved in the standard form of the human disease, called sporadic CJD,
      not the variant caused by eating infected meat. The human and cattle
      diseases cause holes to form in the brain. The Italian researchers found
      that, in addition to the holes, two cows had an accumulation of amyloid
      plaque in their brains. Amyloid plaques are an indication of Alzheimer's
      disease in humans. They have also been found in people with sporadic CJD
      but had not previously been found in cattle, the researchers said. The
      Italians have named the new form of mad cow disease with amyloid plaques
      BASE."

      JAPAN FINDS TENTH SUSPECTED MAD COW DISEASE CASE: (02/23/04): "Japanese
      health authorities reported the country's tenth case of mad cow disease as
      a suspected dairy cow was confirmed to have the disease after a series of
      tests. A meeting of experts concluded the 95-month-old Holstein had bovine
      spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare
      said in a statement. Japan, the only country in Asia to have confirmed
      BSE, uncovered its first case in September 2001 and shortly afterwards
      introduced measures to screen every cow slaughtered for consumption. The
      cow of the most recent case was born in early 1996, like six of the nine
      previous cows that tested positive in Japan.

      FEDS TRY TO LIFT TAINT FROM FOOD EXPORTS: (02/24/04): "The Bush
      administration on Tuesday struggled to limit damage to U.S. meat and
      poultry export markets hit by outbreaks of mad cow disease and bird flu.
      Administration officials told Congress they hoped Canada and Mexico would
      move within days to ease bans on U.S. beef after wrapping up its probe this
      month into the first U.S. outbreak of mad cow disease. The investigation
      concluded that any threat to humans had been contained. But Mexico and the
      European Union joined Japan, South Korea and China in banning all American
      poultry shipments, a day after the discovery of virulent form of bird flu
      on a Texas chicken farm. The same nations also banned U.S. beef and cattle
      after the discovery of mad cow disease in December.

      The shunning of U.S. meat on world markets has raised fears of a
      price-depressing domestic glut. Keith Collins, the USDA's chief economist,
      told a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing that reopening world markets
      to some $3.8 billion in annual American beef exports is a "top priority" of
      the Bush administration. The discovery of bird flu in chickens in Texas,
      Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey this month, and subsequent import
      bans by key U.S. customers, has also taken a toll on exports. The United
      States exports about $2 billion worth of poultry products annually, but
      markets could still grow this year if the bird flu outbreak is successfully
      contained, Collins said."

      LOW-CARB DIETS HAVE A HIGH IMPACT ON THE PLANET: (02/09/04): "...
      whenever we're faced with a fast-growing trend on this shrinking planet,
      scientists should look beyond human health to weigh ecological consequences
      as well. That's what we decided to do for Atkins-style diets. We started
      with the Worldwatch Institute's estimate that 1 billion of Earth's
      inhabitants are overweight and assumed that on average they eat 56 grams of
      animal protein a day.

      If all of those people went on an Atkins-style diet, their requirement for
      animal protein would rise to about 100 grams. A billion dieters each eating
      an extra 44 grams could not easily be satisfied by giving them a bigger
      share of current animal protein production. Instead, by our calculations,
      the meat, dairy, poultry, and seafood industries would have to increase
      output by 25 percent..... the net result of their big switch to animal
      protein would require almost 250 million more acres for corn, soybeans, and
      other feed grains.

      Finding a quarter-billion acres for adequate feed grain harvests would mean
      at least a 7 percent increase in cropland worldwide at a time when farmers
      are already using most of the better land. Much of the newly plowed acreage
      would likely be marginal, prone to greater erosion, and subject to extra
      generous applications of fertilizer and pesticides. Furthermore, feeding
      that grain to all those extra animals would lead to greater air and water
      pollution from feedlots, poultry and hog confinement operations, and
      slaughterhouses. If new pastures were to be created for, say, half of the
      additional animals, a billion more acres would have to be found. Most of
      this would probably be obtained by deforestation, which could mean that 10
      percent of the Earth's remaining forests would have to go.

      It's unlikely that all 1 billion of the world's overweight people will have
      the desire or the means to make the move to expensive animal-based food.
      Nevertheless, the kind of ecological damage we have described will occur in
      direct proportion to the number of people who do adopt the diet."

      WHOLE-GRAIN FOODS MAY LOWER DIABETES RISK: (02/13/04): "People who
      consume plenty of whole-grain foods, particularly fiber-rich cereals, may
      be less likely to develop health conditions that put them at increased risk
      of diabetes, new research suggests. "Individuals who incorporate
      whole-grain foods into their diets may prevent or reduce their risk of
      developing the metabolic syndrome, a clustering of risk factors that often
      precedes type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease," Dr. Nicola M. McKeown
      of the Jean Mayer U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research
      Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston told Reuters Health.

      "In our study, the health benefits of whole grain foods were observed among
      people who consumed three or more servings of whole grains per day,"
      McKeown said. People who ate this much whole grain had better insulin
      sensitivity and were less likely to have the metabolic syndrome, she said.
      "Adding whole grain food to our diet does not require dramatic changes in
      our eating patterns, and there could be substantial health benefits,"
      McKeown said. For instance, people can increase their consumption of whole
      grains by switching from white bread to whole-grain bread and by choosing
      brown rice instead of white rice, she said.

      "Consumers need to carefully examine the food labels in order to identify
      whole grain products," McKeown said. Whole grain products should list a
      whole grain ingredient, such as "whole wheat," "whole rye," "whole-oats" or
      "graham flour," as the first ingredient on the label, she said."

      MORE EVIDENCE VEGETARIAN DIET MAY CUT CANCER RISK: (02/16/04): "Eating a
      meat-free, vegetarian diet may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, new
      research suggests. After following more than 10,000 people for 17 years,
      investigators found that vegetarians were 15 percent less likely to develop
      colorectal cancer than meat-eaters. This study adds to the "increasing
      scientific evidence" that a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fiber and
      low in meat--especially red and processed meat--can prevent colorectal
      cancer, study author Dr. Miguel Sanjoaquin of the University of Oxford, UK,
      told Reuters Health. Along with a decreased risk of cancer from eating
      vegetarian, the investigators found that frequent fruit eaters - consuming
      more than 5 servings of fruit per week--were over 40 percent less likely to
      develop colorectal cancer."

      ANGRY VEGETABLES - A THREAT TO HEALTH?: (02/04): "Scientists at the
      Scientific Test Area for Recent Vegetable Eating (S.T.A.R.V.E.) have
      confirmed that the vegetarian movement may be causing a significant shift
      in the natural order of our food chain. Dubbing the phenomenon "Angry
      Vegetable Syndrome", lead researcher Dr. Michael T. Stowmack is warning of
      the possibility of a global outbreak of hostile vegetation.

      Vegetable rights advocates from Humans for the Ethic Treatment of
      Vegetables were quick to point out that their long-standing crusade against
      eating vegetables was finally paying off. "It's like photosynthetic karma
      dude... Now maybe all you savages will realize that vegetables have

      DO PLANTS ACT LIKE COMPUTERS?: (01/21/04): "Plants appear to 'think',
      according to US researchers, who say that green plants engage in a form of
      problem-solving computation. David Peak and co-workers at Utah State
      University in Logan say that plants may regulate their uptake and loss of
      gases by 'distributed computation' - a kind of information processing that
      involves communication between many interacting units. It's the same form
      of maths that is widely thought to regulate how ants forage. The signals
      that each ant sends out to other ants, by laying down chemical trails for
      example, enable the ant community as a whole to find the most abundant food
      sources.

      Leaves have openings called stomata that open wide to let CO2 in, but close
      up to prevent precious water vapour from escaping. Plants attempt to
      regulate their stomata to take in as much CO2 as possible while losing the
      least amount of water. But they are limited in how well they can do this:
      leaves are often divided into patches where the stomata are either open or
      closed, which reduces the efficiency of CO2 uptake. By studying the
      distributions of these patches of open and closed stomata in leaves of the
      cocklebur plant, Peak and colleagues found specific patterns reminiscent of
      distributed computing. "

      PENTAGON: CLIMATE CHANGE WILL DESTROY US: (02/22/04): "Climate change
      over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing
      millions of lives in wars and natural disasters. A secret report,
      suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer [also
      published in FORTUNE ... see link below], warns that major European cities

      climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread
      rioting will erupt across the world.

      The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to
      the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and
      secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global
      stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to
      its contents. 'Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life,'
      concludes the Pentagon analysis. 'Once again, warfare would define human
      life.'

      The findings will prove humiliating to the Bush administration, which has
      repeatedly denied that climate change even exists. Experts said that they
      will also make unsettling reading for a President who has insisted national
      defence is a priority."

      NEW DELHI ACCUSES PEPSI AND COKE OF SELLING TOXIC COLA: (02/06/04):
      "Coca-Cola and PepsiCo sold soft drinks containing pesticides harmful to
      human health and misled India's one billion people over claims that their
      products were safe for human consumption, according to an Indian
      parliamentary report. An estimated seven bottles of cold drinks per person
      are sold in India each year. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo account for more than 80
      per cent of the $A2.1 billion market.

      A Delhi-based environmental group, the Centre for Science and Environment,
      last year claimed that soft drink products manufactured in India contained
      toxins far above the levels permitted in the developed world. Tests
      conducted by the group showed Pepsi's soft drinks had 36 times the level of
      pesticide residues permitted under European Union regulations. Coca-Cola's
      soft drinks had 30 times the legal level. The tests found toxins,
      including lindane and DDT, in 12 different soft drinks. If ingested over
      long periods, the chemicals could lead to cancer and immune system failure.
      Similar tests on colas sold in the US found no such toxins.

      The US companies were also attacked over the running of two bottling plants
      in the southern state of Kerala. The report said the plants had caused
      water pollution, the depletion of ground water, reduced crop yield, skin
      disorders and other ailments."

      MYSTERIOUS MASS DIE-OFF OF VULTURES SOLVED: (01/28/04): "The catastrophic
      decline of griffon vultures in south Asia is being caused not by a
      mysterious disease, as had been thought, but a common painkiller given to
      sick cattle. If the treated animal dies and is eaten by vultures, a single
      meal can be enough to kill the bird. The scientists who made the discovery
      now want the drug banned from veterinary use and are holding a meeting next
      week with officials from Nepal, India and Pakistan. Griffon vultures are
      huge scavengers and used to be ubiquitous in south Asia. But their
      population has declined drastically since the mid-1990s, and one species is
      near extinction. As a result, animal carcasses rot outside villages,
      attracting rabies-ridden packs of dogs. The Parsee religious community in
      India is also in crisis, as it disposes of its dead by feeding them to
      vultures."

      EPA SUED FOR ILLEGALLY TAKING DIRECTION FROM CHEMICAL INDUSTRY GROUP:
      (01/15/04):
      "Conservation and pesticide-watchdog groups today filed a lawsuit to stop
      the Environmental Protection Agency from giving illegal special access to a
      group of chemical corporations. Documents obtained under the Freedom of
      Information Act and other sources reveal that the corporate insider group
      has met regularly with EPA officials in secret and has urged EPA to weaken
      endangered species protections from pesticides. The chemical companies
      are pushing EPA to weaken pesticide safeguards by cutting expert biologists
      in the US Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA Fisheries out of consultations
      determining the effects of pesticides on wildlife. At the companies'
      urging, EPA has starting a rulemaking to reserve authority over such
      evaluations to itself.

      "EPA is letting the pesticide industry have inside influence over the fate
      of endangered species poisoned by toxic pesticides," said Patti Goldman of
      Earthjustice, which brought the lawsuit on behalf of the conservation and
      watchdog groups. "EPA has an open door policy to the biggest chemical
      companies in America while excluding the rest of us," said Mike Senatore of
      Defenders of Wildlife. "That's not right. In America all voices are
      supposed to be heard, not just wealthy interests that make campaign
      contributions."

      'VIRTUAL VETS' HELP ANIMALS IN INDIA: (02/15/04): "Internet kiosks are
      being used to link animal owners in remote areas to veterinarians who can
      offer them medical advice over the World Wide Web. Most of India's 600,000
      villages are home to farm animals and companion animals; most also lack
      trained vets, according to Ashok Jhunjhunwala, founder of n-Logue
      Communications, which developed the Internet kiosks. Currently there are
      450 "Vet on the Net" kiosks set up in rural villages throughout India, with
      plans to add another 9000 units this year.

      Each kiosk has a computer with local language software, and features
      videoconference capabilities, with a camera allowing veterinarians to view
      most animals - such as cats, dogs and chickens - in real time. If the
      animal is too large or too sick to fit inside the booth - a cow or a horse,
      for instance - the owner can email pictures to aid in the veterinarian's
      diagnosis."

      CBS CRIES FOUL ON PETA, MOVEON SUPER BOWL ADS: (02/13/04): "U.S. football
      fans will not see ads featuring scantily clad vegetarians or a political
      attack on President Bush during February's Super Bowl after CBS said on
      Thursday that advocacy advertisements were out of bounds on professional
      football's biggest day. The network, over the years, has rejected dozens of
      advertising proposals by advocacy groups, who argue that the network only
      airs controversial messages that it agrees with.

      "We just want to be able to present our jiggly women," said Lisa Lange,
      spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asking to join
      advertisers like beer brewers who has boosted sales with images of
      scantily-clad women. Liberal group Moveon.org, known for its Internet
      funding power, told members this week that it hoped to have the first
      political Super Bowl ad. But its hopes were dashed when CBS said the spot,
      which asks "Guess who's going to pay off President Bush's $1 trillion
      deficit?" was an issue piece and could not run.

      In a letter, CBS told PETA that it would not run advertisements on
      "controversial issues of public importance." The PETA ad shows two
      scantily clad women snuggling up to a meat-eating pizza delivery man. "Meat
      can cause impotence," the screen reads after the rendezvous fails. CBS
      also said the PETA spot raised "significant taste concerns."

      TESTS SHOW DOGS ARE ALMOST HUMAN: (02/16/04): "If you think your dog can
      read your mind, you're right. Because pooches and people have kept company
      for hundreds of generations, Canis familiaris is hard-wired to pick up
      human social cues, a US anthropologist claims. According to Brian Hare of
      Harvard University, the insight will help trace the evolution of dogs, and
      may help explain the origins of autism in people and point towards possible
      therapies. "The first diagnostic test for autism is the inability to use
      social cues," he said. "Autists are very poor at reading things like
      eye-gaze or pointing, something called joint attention."

      Not so your average mutt, he says. "It looks like dogs evolved an unusual
      ability to read human gestures and cues, and manipulate and predict human
      behaviour.
      "They were selected to do that through domestication," Dr Hare told the
      American Association for the Advancement of Science, meeting in Seattle -
      and he has the evidence to prove it. In the first two of four studies, Dr
      Hare and colleagues in Germany and Hungary found dogs are better at a test
      of their ability to interpret social cues than even our primate cousins the
      chimpanzees, and the dog's closest relation, the wolf."

      TEN SIGNS OF HOPE FOR THE ANIMAL RIGHTS MOVEMENT: "I'm an upbeat person.
      At PETA, I'm often referred to as "Bruce Poppins," because I tend to ignore
      the bad and accentuate the good, sometimes a bit quixotically, I will
      admit. Basically, I figure that worry and pessimism are a prescription for
      burnout, not empowerment. If we lose our sense of humor and optimism, we're
      bound to be less effective as activists. When I look at the world around
      me, I am filled with vicarious pain at the level of suffering in the world,
      but also with hope at the number of selfless people working to make it a
      better place. As I pondered a list of ten, I came up with about 25 things
      that give me an amazing amount of hope, and struggled to limit them.

      Look how far the animal rights movement has come in just the past 20 years:
      Science has shown that a low fat vegan diet is the healthiest;
      environmental researchers have proved that eating meat, dairy products, and
      eggs is not sustainable. Even more importantly, the scientific view that
      animals don't feel emotion has been replaced by a belated understanding
      that, of course they do. In just the past few years, the issue of animal
      treatment on factory farms has taken center stage, with the U.S. Congress
      decrying slaughterhouse treatment of animals, the fast-food giants
      requiring some improvements for animals, and the Washington Post running
      front-page stories about some of the abuses.

      The 20th century abolished child labor, criminalized child abuse, and gave
      women the vote and blacks wider rights. If we all do as much as we can, the
      21st century will be the one for animal rights."

      "Besides discussing his personal history and the details of the "Meat
      Defamation" trial, Lyman discussed people's health and the effect of eating
      meat. "I think we have a terrible future ahead of us," he said. "One in two
      Americans die of heart disease. One in three will have cancer. Two in three
      are overweight or obese and diabetes is growing. I want to talk to you
      tonight about common sense."

      "We kill 10 billion animals every year for food. We are killing animals,
      but the animals are killing us," he said.

      Lyman believes if he had not changed his own diet, he would not be alive
      today. "I never met a burger that was worthy dying for," he said. Lyman
      discussed several studies that have shown that animal protein is associated
      with cancer or will accelerate the rate of cancer and cause death.
      According to Lyman, the average American consumes 17 percent protein. He
      added that the World Health Organization says 5 percent protein is all that
      should be consumed.

      As evidence, Lyman sited the China Project that shows that people in China,
      which has a substantially larger plant-based diet, have less cancer, less
      heart disease and less obesity but consume more calories than Americans.

      "I became a vegetarian because of my health. I became a vegan because of my
      health. But today I am a plant eater because of my animal concerns," he
      said.

      Lyman shared stories of how animals are being fed the waste of other
      animals and the way this spreads disease among animals and perhaps even to
      the human population. Above all else, Lyman's message was a message of
      self-education. "Go read the information. Get the books. Go to the library.
      Find out about these issues. Educate yourself and make a decision about
      what you're going to do," he said."
