On January 8, 2008, decedent Julian Agurs was attempting to cross the
street in the 1300 block of Rhode Island Avenue, NE, when he was shot and killed by a unknown gunmen. The gun men was later identified as Antonio Harvey.
During the week of December 18, 2009, a Superior Court jury returned
guilty verdicts on 17 counts, including First Degree Murder, in the case of United States v. Antonio Harvey. In yet another example of callous and senseless street violence inspired by a pointless beef between neighborhood street gangs, the defendant and his associates drove through the area of Rhode Island Avenue and 14th Street NE, they considered this to be enemy territory” When the defendant saw some of his rivals, he yelled to them: “caught you loafin The decedent, Julian Agurs, yelled back, “hey, it’s my birthday,” at which point the defendant opened fire, firing multiple times killing Julian Agurs on his 17th
birthday. Other young men were also struck. All-in-all, the jury
convicted the defendant of first degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to kill, and several related firearms charges.
Assistant United States Attorney, David Sabot, former 5D community
prosecutor, did a terrific job marshaling the evidence for trial, and presented
a thoughtful, compelling case to the jury. The jury took little time
concluding that the defendant was responsible for this egregious act of
violence. For this excellent work, I congratulate Attorney Sabot and the
Fifth District community with this conviction.
