FW: MEDIA ADVISORY: HALLOWEEN SAFE HAVEN PARTIES
October 30, 2009
DC Police Continue to Host Halloween Safe Haven Parties
The Metropolitan Police Department will host Halloween Safe Haven parties around the city to offer a community-friendly option for the city’s youth.
The events are grant funded. Officers began planning the annual events in October 2002, leading up to Halloween prior to the arrest of the so-called D.C. Sniper suspects. The parties were designed to ease fears and allow families an indoor option for trick or treaters. Seven years later, officers look forward to hosting these events to meet and greet the youngest community members.
Each police station will host an event in addition to a new event this year at Bald Eagle Recreation center in Southeast Washington, where officers and Recreation Center staff will host youth boxing demonstrations to highlight a successful after-school program aimed at showing local youth an alternative to violence.
