      Dear Neighbors and colleagues,

Yesterday, the MPD 5th District Citizens’ Advisory Council held its last meeting ahead of the traditional summer hiatus.  The meetings will resume in September.  Last night’s community meeting was held at the Mount Horeb Baptist and provided the 5D community, particularly residents of the Trinidad community to ask questions to local and federal law enforcement officials, as well as our city elected officers regarding the shooting death of Trey Alexander Joyner.  Also attending the meeting was the family of the late Trey Alexander Joyner.

I thank each of the following government officials who accepted the community invitation and responded to concerns and questions from 5D residents:

The Honorable Harry “Tommy” Thomas, Jr.

      The Honorable Phil Mendelson

      The Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton

Peter Newsham, Assistant Chief of Police for Investigations, DCMPD

Joseph Persichini Assistant Director In Charge, FBI Washington Field Office

Salvatore Lauro, Chief of Police, United States Park Police

Trena Carrington, Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, USDOJ

The Honorable Lorraine Miller, President, NAACP Washington Branch

While 5DCAC will be on a summer break, it will meet as an Executive Committee and as appropriate respond to emergency or other important issues should any occur during July and August.  Please note there will be a Ward 5 and 5DCAC National Night Out event to which all you are invited.  More details will follow later in July.

Please mark your calendars not only for our return to regular meetings in September, but also make plans to attend 31st Annual 5DCAC Awards Gala on Thursday, 22 October 2009 at the Washington Navy Yard.  A single ticket price is $40.00.  The Gala is the culminating event by the Ward 5/5D community honors the officers and civilian employees of 5D MPD.  Business community supports include BET Networks, CVS Pharmacies, and MC Dean.   Ticket information about Gala is available at the following link:

Finally, neighbors your MPD 5D Citizens’ Advisory Council is not a Democrat or Republican political organization.  It is a Ward 5 community-based organization which meets to discuss public safety related issues with government officials and business leaders.  It is at its best when citizens in the 5D community are informed and participate.  Membership is open to all in the Ward 5 5D community and all are invited.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE SUMMER!!!  SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER.
