The Department of Employment Services' Office of Youth Programs is sponsoring a 2008 Summer Youth Program Registration and Career Expo, Friday, February 29, 2008 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Walter Washington Convention Center.  Youth will be out of school this day and it would be a wonderful opportunity for them to register for the program (summer jobs) and see the opportunities available to them for the summer.

I have attached a flyer for the event and ask that you would please disseminate among the police stations (especially to your Youth Departments)  to inform them of this exciting opportunity. The Mayor will be in attendance and there will also be a "What to Wear To Work" fashion show and give-a-ways!   Young people just need to pick up an application from the Office of Youth Programs located at 625 H Street, NE or download it from www.does.dc.gov and Click on Youth Services, complete it and bring it to the Convention Center with the appropriate documents to verify date of birth, Social Security Number and District residency.  If the youth are under the age of 18, the application must be signed by their parent or guardian.

      Sincerely,

If you are aware of any summer camp programs or summer events that are of little to no cost to DC Residents, (including events hosted by the Smithsonian, local churches and other organizations), please contact us at 202-727-8809 or yvonne.smith@....  We are preparing our Summer of Safety calendar of events, and the Chief would like for all DC parents and guardians to have information about available opportunities to keep their school-aged youth supervised and safe in the summer months, (when juvenile arrests typically increase across the nation).  We have partnered with the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), which will release a Spring/Summer guide by April with information on summer activities for youth, including camps and field trips.  Guides will be mailed to every DC household.  In addition, we will partner with the Department of Employment Services (DOES) to provide summer jobs to young people, ages 14 -21.  On Saturday, March 29, from 10am to 2pm, MPD will host a Youth Summit, which will include registering youth for the summer jobs offered by DOES.  For more information on the Youth Summit, contact Lendia.Johnson@....   For more information on the DOES Summer Youth Employment Program and to download application forms, visit:  http://does.dc.gov/does/cwp/view,a,1232,q,537757.asp .  You can also call DOES at 202-698-3991.  No young person should be idle this summer.  More information is forthcoming on the Summer of Safety 2008 program, which will highlight hundreds of supervised events to engage young people during the entire summer break for our city’s students.  To read about last year’s summer program, visit: http://www.mpdc.dc.gov/sos
