(Washington, DC)-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating two deaths that occurred in the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

On Thursday, April 16, 2014, at approximately 11:16 am, police officers from the Sixth District responded to a call for the report of a man down. Upon arrival, they located an adult male unconscious and unresponsive. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and determined there were no signs consistent with life. The decedent was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia, where an autopsy was performed but the cause and manner of death remain pending.

The decedent has been identified as 57-year-old Robert Shafley of Northeast, Washington, DC.

While investigating the death of Mr. Shafley, detectives located a short distance away a second adult male that was also unconscious and unresponsive. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and determined there were no signs consistent with life. The decedent was subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia, where an autopsy was performed but the cause and manner of death remain pending.

The decedent has been identified as 61-year-old Andrew Thomas of no fixed address.

While the suspected cause of the deaths appears to be hypothermia, the final determination will be made by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. These investigations are continuing.
