Please note the final public input meeting regarding the future of MPD GLLU is this coming Monday at 7pm 651 Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E. Everyone is welcome to attend to express opinions (positive, negative, or indifferent) or concerns regarding the GLLU. Further information is below, including a brief description of GLLU for those interested.

WHAT IS THE GAY & LESBIAN LIAISON UNIT (GLLU)?

The Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU) is a unit of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) that focuses on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) communities. Members of GLLU provide 24-hour on-call response to citizens in all 7 DC police districts, investigate hate crimes and other incidents involving members of the GLBT communities, provide training and investigative support to other members of MPD, and perform outreach at community events and business. In 2006, the GLLU was awarded the prestigious "Innovations in American Government Award" from Harvard University’s Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation for reaching out to an under-served community and creating a model for community policing. The GLLU website is at http://www.gllu.org

WHY IS MPD ASKING FOR COMMUNITY INPUT REGARDING GLLU?

Over the past several weeks, MPD has held community meetings to solicit input about the GLLU and how it can be improved. Before making any changes, however, MPD believes public comment should be sought concerning the GLLU. The information gleaned from these meetings will be incorporated into a final plan for enhancements to the GLLU. A representative from each of the meetings will be asked to meet with the Chief so that she may inform them of the plan for the unit.

HOW CAN THE PUBLIC PROVIDE INPUT?

The final public input meeting is scheduled for this coming Monday, August 6th, 2007 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at 651 Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E., which is accessible via the Eastern Market Metro stop. For those who are unable to attend the meetings, the MPD has created an e-mail address enabling members of the community to provide suggestions and/or concerns regarding the GLLU. The address is mpdc.liaisonunits@....

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who has comments regarding the future of the GLLU, especially those who do not have access to e-mail.

      Yours,

      Matt
