Last call for Request for Planting Program (RFP) grant submissions

for the fall 2007 tree planting season. Applications are due June 15.

Casey Trees Request for Planting (RFP) Program is designed to help

increase tree cover in the District of Columbia by giving trees to

resident groups or organizations that commit to plant and maintain

these trees. This season we are especially encouraging applications

for planting shade trees on private property.

The application form and additional information is online at:

      ----------

New! Casey Trees Summer 2007 Tree Stewardship Events

Volunteers are invited to help water and care for recently planted

trees at a series of five Saturday events June 23 - July 21. Casey

Trees, a District-based nonprofit organization working to restore

the tree canopy in the Nation's Capital, will provide demonstrations

on the proper use of watering devices, proper weeding and mulching

techniques, re-staking or removal of tree stakes and general care of

area trees. Volunteers with no previous experience will be teamed

with experienced Citizen Foresters, interns and participating

partners to care for trees. The events are being held in conjunction

with the Department of Parks and Recreation, DDOT's Urban Forestry

Administration and neighborhood groups. No experience is necessary

and all events are free. Tools, training and refreshments are

provided. All events are from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Volunteers are asked to sign a release form at the event.

Participants under 18 must also have a release form signed by a

parent or guardian. An adult must accompany each child under 16.

Groups of 40 or more should contact volunteer coordinator Karen

Payne ahead of time by phone at (202) 833-4010 ext. 109 or by email

at: kpayne@... Casey Trees stewardship events are a great way to

meet others from the community while helping to keep District

      neighborhoods green.
