I also would like to thank everyone for coming out to support the ANC 5D National Night Out event. If it wasn't for your participation and assistance the event would not have been as successful as it was. To my colleagues Commissioner Blacknell and Commissioner India Henderson kudos on a job well done. Your tireless effort in supporting your respective communities is evident. I would like to say a very special thank you to Chairperson Kathy Henderson because it was her idea to commemorate the event with a celebration and the key organizer in ensuring that every Commissioner was aware of the services they promised to complete and also the primary liasion between all agencies/individuals. Commissioner K. Henderson since our appointment your dedication to your community and that of your neighboring commissioner's is remarkable and a true testiment to the public servant you are. As a "new commissioner" I appreciate your years of experience because with it our commission is able to function at full capacity and efficiently advocate for a better quality of life for our constituents.
Again, thank you to everyone that made last night a success.

      Good Evening All:
I am very pleased to report that we had a great time yesterday celebrating National Night Out, which is the one day every neighbor in every corner of the country can feel safe. We started on-time and ended on on-time. Thank you Commissioners  Blacknell, Lewis and Henderson for joining me in executing the plan to assemble our neighbors at designated locations then walking to the Starburst Plaza for a joyous celebration. Thank you Captain Wright for assembling your team and executing the plan to perfection; Lieutenant Durand had the tables, banner and grill delivered and in place on time. Officer Dennis served from start to finish as the grill master extraordinaire and Officer Miles delievered public safety joy to all that posed for pictures with McGruff the Crime Dog. ourThe rest of the team including   Commander Solberg, Officer Gamm, Lt. Wright, Captain Kane, Officer Weidefeld and countless others and Chief Lanier, Assistant Chief Groomes, Assis tant Chief Durham, Captain Ennis and what seemed like a majority of MPD personnel engaged residents, answering questions, posing for pictures and making our National Night Out one of the best events ever. I offer a special thanks to Assistant Chief Groomes for assisting our efforts to make this event successful. Thank you 5D CAC Chair Frances Penn and company for stopping by and joining the fun. Lieutenant Bernat, Sergeant Swarn and Officer Prade also helped to prepare for this event.
Our partners really stepped up and I would be remiss if I did not share how their efforts support our community and our fervent desire for never ending public safety. Safeway generously donated enough burgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments, brocoli and sodas to feed the crowd that assembled at 6:00 p.m. and stayed until the event ended at 9:00 p.m. The Food 7 Store and CVS donated sodas, bottled water and a mobile beverage cooler. Sam Ford, a general assignment reporter for ABC7/WJLA-TV and his team Peggy Dilgannon and Rick "G." televised live from the event, broadcasting why National Night Out activities are so important. Home Depot generously donated the flowers we planted at the Starburst, DPW crews helped us clean the site and DDOT Director Terry Bellamy "worked a miracle" to get the waterfall operational in time for the event. We greatly appreciate his diligent efforts to support our community and we appreciate him joining us at the event. We were also honored by the presence of Steven Weitzman who is the artist responsible for creating the Starburst mural and design. Mr. Weiztman greatly enjoyed interacting with citizens and hearing firsthand how much we appreciate the beauty of the Starburst Plaza. Our distinguished government partners that attended our event include  DOJ AUSA's Wendy Polhaus and Jamila ("Jami") Hodge, DCRA Director Nick Majett, Courtney Williams from the Office on Aging, a CSOSA representative and Dwayne Williams from DOH, whose team tirelessly administered free and discreet HIV/AIDS tests at the event.
Finally, I am so pleased that so many neighbors showed up to support the event and meet fellow neighbors. Some neighbors immediately pitched in to help serve food without being asked. Thank you Marjorie Barnes, Frankie Scroggins, "Toppie" Egwuronu, Troy Watson, Nellie Green and Commissioner Blacknell for caring about the community. Kipp DC representatives affirmed their commitment to help educate our children, which definitely supports improving our public safety.
We had a great time working together and celebrating together, helping to improve the safety of where we live. It is always my pleasure to support National Night Out. I offer a rousing and heartfelt thank you to all that helped to make this celebration wonderful and all of the citizens that celebrated this special event in their communities.
      Warmest Regards,
      Commissioner Kathy Henderson, 5D05
