- There are proper procedures to follow when parking is requested to be restricted for events on public space. Those flyers were NOT issued by MPD or DPW. Next time this occurs, please call 9-11 for police assistance.

Let me preface this by saying that I understand that street parking is a public resource, and that those of us who utilize street parking in our neighborhood are not in any way guaranteed to find parking on our own block, much less right in front of our own houses.That said, DC has a residential permit parking program for a reason - which is to at least to try to disallow folks from other parts of town or outside the District from descending on a neighborhood in the morning and taking up every single free parking space for the entire day.I am happy that we have a temporary RPP to provide to visitors, and I am also happy to visit MPD5D headquarters when necessary to obtain a temporary permit. It was my understanding that only DDOT or the MPD were permitted to provide such temporary permits.Today, though, was truly too much.A DCPS professional development event took place at the old Emery Education Campus site at First and R Sts NE today. This afternoon I counted over 35 cars from various jurisdictions spread across the unit block of R St NE, the 100 block of R St NE, and the 1600-1700 blocks of First St NE (I didn't actually check Quincy Place NE) with the following sign in their front window:It was near impossible to find a parking spot for blocks.Note that there is ABUNDANT DCPS-run parking at McKinley Tech, and there is also fairly abundant non-restricted parking on Second St NE alongside McKinley.Could DCPS please confirm whether folks were advised to use McKinley or the non-restricted parking in the first instance, or were they just told to park as close to Emery and convenient to them as possible without regard for the neighbors?Could DDOT and MPD please inform us whether it is even legal for DCPS to issue these 'parking permits'? I did not see any parking tickets issued, so it appeared that parking enforcement honored these 'permits'.Finally, could we please receive some assurances that DCPS will not take it upon themselves to issue dozens of 'parking permits' in for our residential neighborhood in the future, and instead encouraging teachers to utilize public transport, use available DCPS owned parking, and/or use non-restricted parking located just blocks away?Thank you,Elizabetha mom who had planned to do the grocery shopping this afternoon--Elizabeth Brooks Lyttleton

- DPW does parking enforcement M-F. DC Police are in charge of enforcing
parking on the weekends. I have heard (via another listserv or blog, I
don't recall) that DC has made a choice not to enforce church-related
parking issues on Sundays. I agree that it's a major safety issue and
would like MPD to officially respond.
This issue is also a huge concern at RIA NE between 4th and 9th, where
there are always cars double parked on Sundays and (literally) hundreds of
people illegally crossing the road where there are no crosswalks (though,
there is an argument to be made that if everyone crosses there, there
should be a crosswalk, but that's DDOT's domain.)
