      Driver Shot, Wounded in Robbery

An armored car driver was shot and wounded during a robbery yesterday
morning in front of a busy supermarket in Northeast Washington, authorities
      said.

The 59-year-old driver, who was not identified because police consider him to
be a witness, was shot in the chest and listed in stable condition at
      Washington Hospital Center, authorities said.

The robbery took place about 10:25 a.m. when the driver walked out of a
Safeway supermarket in the 1600 block of Maryland Avenue NE, police said.
The driver was carrying a bag with about $20,000 in cash, a police official
      said.

As the driver headed toward his truck, which was idling nearby, a robber
approached and snatched the bag out of his hands, police said. The robber
then shot the driver at least once in the chest area, police said.

Witnesses said they heard three shots. The driver was armed with a handgun,
but police officials said it did not appear that he was able to draw the weapon.
The gunman and an accomplice ran away, police said.

Carolyn Anthony was working as a clerk in a checkout lane when she heard "
pow, pow, pow " from outside the store, she said. Customers and clerks
scattered and ducked for cover, she said.

A few minutes later, Anthony said, she went outside to find the wounded
driver sitting on a chair. She said she knows him, calling him a "cool dude."

"It is scary when something like this happens to a good man," she said.

The gunman was described as a heavyset man, about 6 feet tall. He was
wearing sunglasses and had shoulder-length hair. Police said the accomplice
was about 5 feet 8 and about 170 pounds. He also was described as having
shoulder-length hair. The assailants possibly were wearing wigs, police said.

The robbers may have been watching the supermarket in the parking lot for
several minutes before the heist, authorities said.

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 202-
727-9099. They offer rewards of up to $10,000 in violent robberies.

Police officials said at least one other person was in the armored car during
      the incident.

Officials with Dunbar, the company that owns the truck, did not return calls
      seeking comment.

A manager at the Safeway store directed calls to the company's corporate
headquarters. A spokesman for the company also did not return calls for
      comment.

The store was closed for at least two hours.
