RE: [MPD-5D] break-ins on Q Street NW [unit block]
TG and all,
For the past several weeks we have focused on burglaries on the east side of North Capitol Street in response to an increase there.
Apparently our success in that effort has led to an increase in burglaries on the west side of North Capitol.
We do have our officers patrolling the alleys on foot, in cars, and on mountain bike.
All our officers in 5D are to ride or walk through at least ten alleys on every shift, and I know that residents in PSA 501 have seen an increase in alley patrols, as they have told us that when we see them in those alleys.
We are also adding more footbeat officers into each PSA in 5D in an attempt to bring our officers into more direct contact with the residents of the neighborhoods where they work, exactly as you mention.
I am confident you will see these officers and that they will effect positive change in the 5D communities.

Subject: [MPD-5D] break-ins on Q Street NW [unit block]
on Monday Jan 30. @ 11:30am there were several break-ins and attempted break-ins of home on the unit block of Q Street NW via the alleyway. some homes on First St NW were also broken into.
police response was satisfactory, but unfortunately, it was after the fact
as a homeowner on the unit block of Q St NW , i know that crime is a constant presence and that we must be individually vigilant to prevent property theft. however, that must work hand-in hand with a strong police presence. officers cannot only cruise the streets patrolling the front sides of houses, but must also patrol the rear of the houses---the alleys--where most of the crime and quality of life issues occur. this must happen via patrol car AND on foot and happen both during the day and at night. if a potential perp knows that a squad car may be pulling up in the alley where they are up to no good, then that will drive them away before they even have a chance to break the law.
I'm hoping that you'll listen to this call for additional patrols on behalf of me and my neighbors...we'll be looking out for you
