      Good Day MPD-5D:

I am concerned about the old vacant Margaret Murray Washington Senior High School in the unit block of O Street NW. Usually, the school would have lights come on surrounding the building at night but, as of lately, when night time approaches, all of the lights surrounding the building as of now, does not come on at all and it is so dark around and in front of the school, that it will be a safe haven for the "DRUG DEALERS and other CRIMINALS" to do their illegal activities there. I did call 311 at the Mayor's Citywide Office Center numberous times to take care of the problem but, I got no response or feedback from anybody.

Is there anything that can be done to take care of the situation?

While on the subject of schools, does anybody know what is being built on the construction site at Dunbar Senior High School's football field right next to Armstrong Charter School?

      A response is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your inquiry and we have been working with DRES/DCPS to keep this vacant school secured/boarded up for we have had two break ins as well… we will notify them to add additional lighting as well to deter such loitering and criminal behavior … the 5d PSA team also has been giving this special attention as well

The football field next to DUNBAR is the new construction for the NEW DUNBAR High School … they broke ground on November 18th…. Dunbar students will remain in the standing Dunbar while the new school is being constructed on the football field…

The M.M. Washington building is being renovated for senior citizen housing.  I'm not sure why the lighting has recently changed but for more details, you might want to contact your ANC Commissioner Sylvia Pinkney.  As to the construction on the Dunbar stadium site, the crews are constructing a brand new Dunbar High School building which, when completed, promises to be a gem of the neighborhood.  The existing school building (which most resembles a jail) will be torn down and a new stadium will rise on that end of the lot.  If you are concerned about traffic, noise and other issues tangential to the construction, especially as they entertwine with activities at the CAPCS site, you might want to attend the curb cut meeting tonight (Tuesday, January 31st) at CAPCS.  Enter the buidling from the P Street side.

Again, Thank you very much Asst. Chief, Groomes for having the police officers present in the neighborhood and for putting the police van right on the corner of First and O Street NW to keep the men and women who visits the SOME House, the School kids and "ESPEACIALLY" the Drug Dealers from loitering in the neighborhood in front of the homeowners properties. As you have mention I am glad that this pratice will remain.

Have a bless day you all at MPD,5-D.

Regarding the van at 1st and O St, could anyone from MPD offer more
information as to it's purpose? During what hours is it manned? Will there
be any community outreach performed from said van, as it's name purports
to be it's purpose? Finally, is this going to be a long-term fixture at
                        that intersection?

While I do appreciate MPD's presence on my block, the van does cause problems
with sight-lines (which could actually be counterproductive), and it's
constant presence serves to some degree to perpetuate the stereotype that
this particular block is some sort of out of control criminal hotspot,
                        which it is not.

                        Thank you,

                        Rob

                          Rob,

We move the van across the city to address certain needs from time to time, in areas where we feel a strong MPD presence (even if the van is sometimes unmanned) can provide a visible sign of police efforts.

It will not be here forever, and if you email me directly about how the sight lines are affecting you and your neighbors we can look at moving it to a better spot.

                          Andy Solberg
                          Commander, 5D

Regarding the van at 1st and O St, could anyone from MPD offer more
information as to it's purpose? During what hours is it manned? Will there
be any community outreach performed from said van, as it's name purports
to be it's purpose? Finally, is this going to be a long-term fixture at
                          that intersection?

While I do appreciate MPD's presence on my block, the van does cause problems
with sight-lines (which could actually be counterproductive), and it's
constant presence serves to some degree to perpetuate the stereotype that
this particular block is some sort of out of control criminal hotspot,
                          which it is not.

                          Thank you,

                          Rob

MPD - Thank you so much for your presence at 1st and O St NW to make the residents of the Bates Area feel safe.  It really means a lot that you have devoted the MPS van to this corner and what I would refer to as a 'out of control' drug trading area despite what the previous poster indicated.  I live within two blocks of this corner and drive by it several times per day.  This area is continuous problem that needs to be addressed to curtail the continual issues.

While I do appreciate MPD's presence on my block, the van does cause problems
with sight-lines (which could actually be counterproductive), and it's
constant presence serves to some degree to perpetuate the stereotype that
this particular block is some sort of out of control criminal hotspot,
                            which it is not.

                            Thank you,

                            Rob

Please, by all means Madame and Sir let the Police Van stay right where it is on the corner at First and O Street NW for as long as if possible!! I do not know how Rob (Unless he has just moved into the neighborhood) could even think that this area is not a hot spot, for your information this is a REAL REAL HOT SPOT on this particular block, I ought to know considering I have lived here for a long time and had witness some bad awful things that you could not even think or imagine of and is still continuing to this day. So, everything else pertaining to things such as sight-line and etc., IS NOT IMPORTANT where as a person's safety in their own neighborhood is and I do beleive that the rest of the neighbor's will agree!!

Thank you all at MPD-5-D for your response and assistants in this matter.

                                Commander Solberg, et al,

I noticed the van was moved up out of the No Parking area at the corner last week. Thank you for doing so! It makes the corner much easier and safer to navigate both for vehicular traffic and pedestrians.

I appreciate any police presence in the neighborhood, including the van and the officer I've seen stationed at the opposite end of O St. The van does seem to have an affect on loitering at the corner store where it is parked. Unfortunately, in the same time period, I've also noticed an uptick in folks hanging out and sleeping in the unofficial "parking lot" across O St, often behind cars where they aren't as visible from the street. If possible, I'd love to see more police presence on bike or foot coming through the area to keep those folks on their toes as well.

And as always, the residents of Hanover and Bates welcome neighbors and MPD on our weekly safety walks. We meet Thursday evenings at 8:00, coincidentally right by the van :) It's a great way to meet neighbors and stay more informed about what is going on. Hopefully we can increase our presence now that the weather is warming up.

To: Assist Chief, Groomes and Commander, Solberg:

I feel my previous comments require some clarification. I did not by any means say that the unit block of O St NW did not have it's share of crime, or more. I live a few houses down from that intersection, and have for some time - trust me, I know. I was merely questioning the efficacy of placing the van there for the foreseeable future, and wondering if it wouldn't be better placed, for instance, near MM Washington, where the street is woefully underpopulated, or perhaps a few blocks north, where the incidence of muggings and other violent crimes are dramatically higher.

Incidentally, I would love to see any of the posters here or MPD officers join us for our weekly community safety walks, which  leave from that intersection every Thursday at 8:00 PM. A core group of us have kept it going strong for over half a year now, despite an expected drop in attendance due to the cold weather. If you would like to have a personal hand in keeping your neighborhood safe, this is a great way to do so, and a wonderful way to meet and discuss concerns with your neighbors in person.

                                  Thanks,

                                  Rob
                                  Unit Block of O, NW

PS - Many thanks to the Commander for noting my initial  concerns about the van and its obstruction of the "No Parking" zone - the intersection has become dramatically safer to traverse since it has been pulled forward.

To: Assist Chief, Groomes and Commander, Solberg:

Thank you.  Last week we moved the van a bit to the east so that people turning from or onto O or 1st could make a safer turn, but we do plan to keep the van there as long as we can.

To: Assist Chief, Groomes and Commander, Solberg:

Thank you thank you thank you MPD for making this area a priority!  This is clearly a hot spot as is the entire North Capital Street NW cooridor between Florida Ave and NY Ave.  Its such a shame and it needs to be dealt with once and for all.  The drug dealers will soon learn that this isnt an easy area to casually 'deal' at anymore.

Also, I just went to the Subway recently and someone offered me drugs, either they are desperate or they are no scared of the consequences of getting caught by MPD that they were being that open about it.

I hope that more neighbors will be able to particpate in the Thursday night safety walks. As Rob mentions, it is a great way to meet your neighbors and create a safer community.

I agree. With the other side of the unit block pretty empty (MM Washington and the Thorton townhouses) it may make more sense to move the van down the street.

I agree. With the other side of the unit block pretty empty (MM Washington and the Thorton townhouses) it may make more sense to move the van down the street. I have noticed a lot of new graffiti down on that side of the block.

I would also suggest that the regular people that hang in the area are quite aware that the van isn't ever manned. While I very much appreciate it, I'm afraid it's usefulness in that spot may have passed. I know people don't have any issue hanging out right next to it drinking alcohol with open containers. We have also had to call the police for homeless people sleeping in the empty lot just across from where the van is.
