Greetings, neighbors, this event for today, Aug. 3, has been postponed. We will get the new time and location to you as soon as we can. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

If you are unable to attend any of the HRIC meetings on the creation of the health insurance exchange or marketplace, we invite you to take this online survey and tell us what you think. It can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DCHRICSurvey

Recently, it has been mandated that women will not have to pay for birth control medication by 2012. This is as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010.

Other benefits include the ability to leave your child on your plan until 26; no lifetime cap on benefits; rescissions are a thing of the past where your coverage cannot be revoked--except in cases of fraud; and all plans are required to cover all preventative care with no copayment. I've attached a consumer alert to provide more info.

We hope to see you at the next meeting: Aug. 11, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Greater Washington Urban League, 2109 14th St., NW; and Aug. 25, at Lammond-Riggs Public Library, 5401 South Dakota Ave., NW, LAR Meeting Room 1.

And I will let you know of the rescheduled Ward 8 meeting. Thank you so much.

      Cordially,

A One City Insured Public Meeting:

      Health Insurance You Can Afford

The Mayor’s Health Reform Implementation Committee (HRIC) cordially invites you to join Councilmember Marion Barry in a community dialogue on the “future of health care in the District of Columbia.” This meeting, which is open to the community, will be Wednesday, August 3, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Anacostia Service Center for the D.C. Department of Human Services’ Income Maintenance Administration at 2100 Martin Luther King Avenue, SE. Parking is available.

President Barack Obama signed the health care reform bill into law on March 23, 2010, and the HRIC has been working since then, to head up the effort to implement the law in the District. The HRIC is encouraging you to attend its next meeting to discuss the following:

      • The structure and governance of this marketplace (also called health insurance exchanges)
      • We will solicit your feedback on how it should operate
      • Who should it serve, and how it should look
      • What must be present for you to use this marketplace
      • Garner your input on affordability
      • And respond to questions and concerns

Who should attend: if you’re a small business owner; a single parent or married with children; uninsured or underinsured; insured through your job; have a pre-existing condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer;  a civic association or ANC leader; or run a health ministry, this is for you. This meeting is part of a series of forums and other events conducted by the HRIC to garner public input. And a lot of information is available on health reform–what it is and what it will mean for you, your family or business. We need as much input as possible to make sure that the District’s health insurance marketplace offers high quality insurance at a price you can afford.
