- Jun 6, 2006Hello all,
This week had a few things going on.
Back about a month ago a car fired off some shots at the market lounge. The car fled but we got a tag number. We saw the car again and it fled again. We later found the car near the listed address and impounded the car for evidence. Officers Hairston and Heraud recognized the driver of the car and got an arrest warrant for Felony Fleeing and Eluding.
Well last night we served a search warrant at 330 Adams Street N.E. The fellow who had fled before was inside and arrested on the warrant. Also we recovered some crack cocaine and arrested four other individuals for Possession with the Intent to Distribute Cocaine. We found out that this is the fourth search warrant at this house in the past three years. I will follow up with the U.S. Attorney's office to see about seizing the house and or boarding it up as a nusiance property.
Also in the 2900 block of South Dakota Avenue, a WMATA Officer was involved in an incident where some criminals tried to run him over with a vehicle. He fired off some rounds and wound up arresting one of the individuals. It turned out that they also were in possession from some licquor that had been taken in a burglary in PSA 502. Nice work Metro Transit.
I know this may be kind of old hat, but Officer Hopper got another gun outside the market lounge. Total last weekend we recovered four guns with six arrests. Two guns out of the hotzone in 501 and the other two were around the Market Lounge.
Further, we are having an increase in Theft from Autos and Stolen Autos again. Please make sure that you leave nothing visible in your car. It only invites the theives to break in. Also get some kind of anti theft device for your car. A club while not much is still better than nothing. Think of an alarm system or lo-jack. I have a thing called the auto lock that goes on the brake pedal. They can't shift it into drive if they can't press the brake pedal down. Also think about joining the Watch your Car Program. It allows us to stop your vehicle if we see it being driven in the early morning hours to make sure it isn't stolen. Check with your PSA Lt. for more information on any of these options. lastly under no circumstances should you ever ever leave your keys in the car with the car running. I know it may be hot getting into your car or just quick trip into the store, but believe me when I tell you the aggravation of trying to get your car back is far worse.
Finally, if you should see some noteworthy performance by an officer please take the time to send a letter or at the very least an e-mail to Commander Greene. Those letters are placed in the officers jacket and it helps for them to know that their efforts are appreciated.
Oh yeah I almost forgot. Lt. Welch has returned from his car accident and feeling fine. He's a good man and we're glad to have him back.
That's about it for now. Take care everyone.

We (about eight of us) actually went through the area about 1:45 Am and stopped two people in the Unit block of O Street N.W. Neither one lived in the area but we've seen them before. We didn't find any drugs so we checked them for warrants and sent them on the way. They did leave because we saw them both walking along Rhode Island Avenue about thirty minutes later. We went through the rest of the neighborhood but no one was out.
When the gunshots went off between 2:30 and 3:00 our units went in. No property damage was found and no injuries reported. If anyone did have property damage we didn't find please call 311 so that we can come out and make a report.
A little off the subject but very important. We are having a problem with cars being stolen throughout the Fifth Dsitrict. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to call 311 if they see any suspicious activity such as someone casing cars or houses.
Also you might consider enrolling in the Watch Your Car Program. What the deal is, is that you get a decal that you put in the back window of your car. This decal gives us permission to stop your car during extreme (like 1AM to 5AM) hours of the morning to make sure that it isn't stolen. If it's not you driving then we can contact you to see if you know who the person is that is driving your car. It's pretty decent deterrent to theft and is an excellent tool for us to catch car thieves. If you would like more information on this program ask your PSA Lt. at your next meeting.
That's about it for now. Take care all.

Subject: [MPD-5D] Shots Sunday night at around 1:30am
I was awoken around 1:30am last night (Sunday) by what I thought to be
4-5 gunshots and then 4-5 return gunshots coming from either the unit
block of Hanover or O street. Did anyone else hear this? Can the
police provide any information on any reported activity in the area
around that time?
Thanks in advance.
