Recent Trip to Black Eagle Dam
- Sunday morning I made a quick trip down to Black Eagle Dam from West
Bank Park in Great Falls. I did it on my bike, so I probably missed
some birds. I had 28 species by the time I got back to home base. My
first stop was to check out around Sac. Island. I saw my first
Blacknecked Stilts. There were 10 of them feeding. I had seen a
Marbled Godwit several days earlier. The strange duck was still down
above Black Eagle Dam. He is surely a domestic that finds life among
the geese and mallards more interesting. The trumpeter swans are
still hanging around above the dam. The mallard and hooded merganser
families are almost fully grown. I also saw a Western and Eared Grebe
and a Belted Kingfisher just below Sac. Island. Just as I was wishing
for a Great Blue Heron, a giant bird took off next to shore and
fulfilled that wish. 'Common' birds filled out the rest of the list.
Not bad for a 30 minute trip in the dog days of a summer morning.
