Quick trip to QLL 16A
After another activity had me camping last Thursday night at the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area east of Holter Reservoir (two Common Loons for QQLL28A1) I decided to head for the Sun River Canyon-Gibson Dam area about noon on Friday to get a few birds in the last empty spot on my map.
Don't know if was that hot afternoon or the cool morning yesterday but it was tough hunting to get 18 species. No bluebirds, chickadees or nuthatches. Just one Yellow-rumped Warbler and maybe ten Chipping Sparrows. Only confirmed woodpecker was a male Red-naped Sapsucker in the thicket along the horse trail in the Home Gulch Campground area (had a 85% maybe on a male Williamson Sapsucker near the south edge of the area).
Best bird was a Ruffed Grouse which took at least five minutes to cross the Beaver - Willow Rd about 25 feet in front of me at 0900. Best discovery for next time is that this road (seasonally gated) is a shortcut to the Benchmark - Augusta Ranger Station Rd (QLL16C).
Gibson Reservoir is at full draw-down and releasing silty water - no loons,or any waterfowl at all, could be found on the diminished pool.
