I found a great little article by Kevin McGowan on the Cornell website. In it, he discusses bird names and suggested pronunciations. His comments on Vaux’s swift are as follows:
“Terres and Websters lists it as "vauks." I talked to someone once who knew some relative of William Vaux and said that they pronounced it vauks."
