      Mobsters,

Mid-May does seem to be the best time to see multiple Whimbrels (not "Whimbrel"!) in Montana.  Fritz Prellwitz had 50 at Lake Bowdoin on 15 May 1996, and Steve Martin reported 27 at Benton Lake on 19 May 2003.

      Subject: [MOB-Montana] Whimbrel Update

      All:

On the way into Benton Lake NWR this morning, I counted about 6 whimbrel in the stubble field to the north. There was one godwit with them and all were at a distance. When leaving the area several hours later, the whimbrel were flying as though something had spooked them. I was not able to get the entire flock in one photo - but counted 32 whimbrel in the most complete shot I got. This may eclipse the cumulative total number of this species sighted in MT over the past 10 or more seasons!
