Hi Montana Birders,
Bob Martinka and I checked the river in Great Falls about midday Wed.
There was an excellent variety of waterfowl near and downriver from
Giant Springs: Mallards, C. Geese, Bufflehead, Redhead, A. Coot, Common
and Hooded Mergansers, both scaup, both goldeneye and Gadwal. Below
Rainbow Dam, in addition to Gadwal and Green-winged Teal there was a
KILLDEER and a SONG SPARROW. A black eagle (likely imm. Bald) was
perched near the Black Eagle Dam.
The raceway below Black Eagle Dam did not produce a Long-tailed Duck
(11:30 and 15:30). However, one was observed south of the Central Ave.
(or is it the 1st Ave. N) bridge, just down river from the railroad
trestle. The bird was diving with some goldeneyes. Its plumage defied
