      Hi Frank,

      I'm looking at replacing my old Garmin 76C with TopHat/XCSoar and hope to get a chance to try this out this weekend in Bright. I've had a play on the ground and XCSoar looks very good, although I'll miss the reliable simplicity of my Brauniger/76C combo. Bit of a faff/features trade off. It sure is nice to have all the no landing info and airspaces on the map though.

      I've currently put both the site guide wpt and airspace files on TopHat. XCSoar/TopHat allows you to use multiple airspace and waypoint files at once (you may need to switch on "advanced" mode for this), but if you need to combine airspace files into a single file it's really easy, too: Just open them in a text editor, append the text of one to the text of the other and save the resulting file. So in Windows: Right-click the openair file, Open With -> Notepad (or whatever you use for plain text), CTRL-A to select all, CTRL-C to copy, open the second airspace file, CTRL-End to get to the last line, press Enter for a new line, CTRL-V to paste, then save the file as a new, combined file and use that.

      For the site guide openair file this is the current mapping I use:

      "Landing", "Access" or "Feature" ->"G"
      "No Landing" -> "GP" = Glider prohibited
      "Powerline" or "Hazard" -> "Q" = Danger
      "No Launching" or "Emergency Landing" -> "R" = Restricted
      "No Fly Zone" -> "P" = Prohibited

      However I simply made that up, and if anyone wants a different mapping, that's fine, I can easily change it or even offer multiple versions.

      I'm keen to hear other people's tips. I'm still trying to work out what screens and fields to display in TopHat and somewhat paralysed by choice.

      Cheers,
      Jan

      PS: I removed Neil Sonneman, the landowner at the bottom of Murmungee, from the "To:" list.

      Hi Jan and all,

      I think there is huge value in having our no-landing zones in a format such as OpenAir that can be loaded into our instruments. No-landing zones are traditionally a huge issue in many flying areas, most recently causing dramas (and safety issues) during the comp in Canungra. Now this maybe a silly question, but would you mind sharing with everyone how we best use this in-flight to actually avoid landing in the marked areas?

      Practical question from a very willing guinea pig:

      1. How do I load these into my Flymaster Live without deleting the actual Bright airspace file that has the 'real'airspace in it?
        (i.e. I think at least the Flymaster instruments clear the memory when loading a new file - is there a way around manually combing files? If not - anyone with a how-to on combining files?)
      2. How do the zones get displayed in flight so a) I can avoid them and they b) don't distract me while flying
        (in XCsoar you can set airspace types to (not) show and to (not) warn I guess - just depends as what type of 'airspace' no-landing zones show up.)
      3. For non-XCsoar users - how to avoid constant airspace alerts when getting close to terrain whilst flying over a no-landing zone etc. etc.
      If anyone is has worked this out - a practical step-by-step guide would be really handy.
      Would make for a great how-to for our website as well...

      Best regards
      Frank

      Hi all,

      I've made the site guide updates requested by Karl and clarified the wording as per Peter's suggestion.

      The OpenAir ( http://vhpa.org.au/siteGuide.O penAir.txt ) and waypoint ( http://vhpa.org.au/siteGuide.O ziExplorer.wpt ) files update automatically, you may want to download the updated versions.

      Cheers,
      Jan

      Hi Peter and Jan

      Having looked at the google map on the site guide and the site guide wording, I think it would be prudent to include the orange section that Peter has marked as a no-landing zone (red shading) along with the property I detailed. The existing landing zone would presumably be shaded green.

      Jan, grateful if you could update the OpenAir file to reflect this, please.

      Cheers!

      Hi Peter

      The information that I am giving out only indicates an updated no-landing area based on feedback from a specific landowner. Other landing/no-landing areas are unchanged as far as I am aware.

      Cheers!

      Karl, Jan

      My screen shot below refers.

      1/ I believe the area I've marked in green on my screen shot is the correct area for landing and should be shown as such in the site guide and the openAir file. That's how I read the present words in the site guide.

      Karl do you agree ?

      2/ The area I've marked in orange seems ambiguous. According to the site guide wording it should be a no landing zone.

      But Karl your diagram indicates that it may be a legitimate landing option. Can you clarify please ?

      Cheers

      Peter

      Hi All

      Neil Sonneman, a landowner of a number of paddocks in the valley near Murmungee Launch (Buckland Ridge) has contacted us to let us know that he does not wish paragliders and hang gliders to be landing on his property.

      Please find attached an image of the areas in question.

      Jan, grateful if you could please update the Site Guide accordingly.
