For pilots climbing out at Pyramid/Little Pyramid and trying to get across into the Kiewa Valley (via Tawonga Gap) there are some paddocks which are pretty much the last landing options if you get low in that area and can't make it back to the Freeburgh area.
One of these properties belongs to John Pianegonda. It has above ground metal sprinklers. John's a really nice guy and he doesn't mind people landing on his place (for now). However, he's worried that pilots might not see the sprinklers and injure themselves landing. To that end a group of visiting pilots have volunteered to put streamers on these sprinklers.
John's other beef is that he's a very hospitable landowner, and he doesn't like pilots simply landing in his property and walking off without saying g'day. He's had a couple of instances recently where pilots have walked past him or his wife without any acknowledgement.
Landowners have varied attitudes. Some don't mind us landing there, but value their privacy. Others appreciate us to saying g'day and thanks - it makes them feel that their allowing us to land there is not taken for granted.
So please, remain mindful that being allowed to land on someone's property is a privilege and vital support for our sport. If you see a landowner, attract their attention and wave to them. If they seem friendly, walk over and greet them (it's simple country politeness). If you leave a landowner with a bad taste in their mouths, they may well withdraw landing privileges.
As always, if you encounter any issues having landed on someone's property, please contact me.
Cheers!
