The Missouri Arts Council and the Missouri Alliance for Art Education is sponsoring a Common Core Workshop for Art Teachers at Southeast Missouri State University’s Serena Building room 312 on Saturday, March 29th from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. "Common Core for Non-Tested Subjects" (A workshop for arts teachers AND teaching artists) "Common Core for Non-Tested Subjects" (A workshop for arts teachers AND teaching artists) Facilitated by Rebecca Moppin, M.Ed, Ed.S. Saturday, March 29 8:00 am- 4:00 pm Levels 1 & 2 Serena Bldg. Rm 312. Southeast Missouri State University. Cape Girardeau Workshop Description Level 1 A hands-on workshop for non-tested subjects and grades, full of discussion and applicable concepts intended for immediate implementation into any curriculum. We will briefly explore the history and purpose of the Common Core State Standards (more recently known as Missouri Core Academic Standards) before moving into discussions of advantages and challenges facing Non-ELA (English Language Arts) and Math content areas. We will use these discussions as a foundation for adapting, improving and creating programs rich in rigor and relevance for 21st Century classrooms. Level 2 We will build on the introduction phase (what is Common Core, reasoning, etc...) with a focus on taking current curriculum and highlighting concepts which align with Common Core standards (ELA and Math). For those who have not developed curriculum we will work developing curriculum aligned to the standards.. We will also continue to build on the 'buy in' aspect with discussion and group sharing. Level 3 We will investigate options for assessments and discuss possibilities for measuring student growth in regards to the integration of the arts and core concepts. The intention is to leave with multiple ideas on useable data in regards of assessment pieces which would be relevant to individual content areas. Facilitator Rebecca Moppin holds an Education Specialist degree in Administration as well as a Masters of Education in Curriculum & Instruction. She has presented workshops and Professional Development programs focusing on curriculum design and assessment for hundreds of educators since 2007 at local, state and national levels. She is a firm believer in whole-child education and specializes in creating curriculum to fit the content area instead of forcing content area to fit curriculum.
