LongarmersUnplugged Meeting Summary for 6/3/2012
We had a delicious and productive afternoon! Attendees were Nancy, Connie, Debbie, Fran, Gail, Joyce, Sharon, Sandy, MaryLynn, and Nicole. Connies hospitality and lovely home provided a fantastic venue for us. The M&M’s were the best!
Longarm Tour: Saturday October 13 is the choosen day. Sharon is our manager and contact person for this event. She is trying to keep the studio sites as close together as possible to make it easier for people to navigate. Advertising was discussed, brightly colored postcards being the most likely to get picked up at quilt shops, fabric stores, and guild meetings. MaryLynn offered to front the advertising as she can include her shop logo on it. (Owner of Howells Sew and Vac in Auburn) We will be hanging quilts outdoors at Nancys and Sharons for sure, anyone else able to put up a few? These quilts can showcase your longarming talents, and you can pin a pocket of business cards on them for people to pick up. We need volunteers to help out at each tour site, hanging quilts, taking down quilts and being a quilters angel. We will be having another meeting soon to finalize the map, the advertising, and the volunteers, as well as the monetary stuff.
Website: Colleen has registered our domain name, Longarmers Unplugged. It needs YOUR input to be built. Please forward an email to colleenvoet@.... Include the following:
Your Name, Your business name, your contact information,or website link, how many years you have been longarming, your specialties, your machine type, 1-3 pictures of your work, and a picture of you and your machine.
Yahoo Account: Debbie has created a yahoo group for us. Go to yahoo.com and sign up for a free account, then join the group. It is like a chat/email forum, you can post pictures, video etc. Thanks Deb! Of course, the group site is called Longarmers Unplugged.
We had our first group vote! It was decided that all members of the group would receive the meeting summary email, not just the attendees…….so that if you don’t come, you can be jealous about everything you missed!
Backup Meeting Site: We have access to a nice mobile home park Clubhouse 4 times a year in Citrus Heights if no one is able to hostess. They need advance notification so that the rooms are reserved, and it is possible to get bumped by a paying venue such as a wedding, but hopefully that won’t happen. What can happen will happen right?
Resources: Connie has purchased a window decal for her vehicle to advertise her longarm business. These are highly visible when they are posted on the back window of your car or van or truck! Fastsigns.com is the link to design and order your custom decal, and they are located in Natomas, Calif.
Great Pantographs: willowleafstudios.com
Topics for future meetings: batting, how to quilt a modern quilt, unplugging with massage therapy, psychology of creating and believing in yourself, quilting tee shirt quilts and photo quilts, entering a quilt show, working with plush fabrics, working with metallic threads. Fran suggested a hands on practice session on premarked quilt tops, and it was suggested that in the future if we have funds, we can hire a big name teacher for our group. Awesome!
Next Meeting: Sunday July 29th 1-5 pm
Hostess: MaryLynn Matthews
Howells Sew and Vac 13555 Bowman Road Auburn CA. 530 885-9624
We will be doing some hands on for our fun activity! Be prepared to share your best freehand fill design.
Connie presented a talk she did for her guild: How to prepare your quilt for a longarm quilter. She went over some of the basic things a piecer could do to make their longarm experience the best. She also showed us the different levels of quilting, edge to edge, custom 1 and 2, and had a finished quilt to show for each level. Then she shared some cool ways to present your edge to edge patterns to a customer so that they could visualize the patterns on “their quilt”. Thanks Connie!
We had a “garage sale” for our fun activity! Products and dollars flew back and forth, and satisfactory exchanges were made all around. There were some really neat items, fabrics, rulers, kits, and just general good stuff to have in your studio!
Business Meeting: We watched a short DVD on crosshatching, and then launched into a discussion of easy marketing methods. Product branding, info flyers, brochures, and thank you cards were included topics. Next, we talked about rewards programs, and various business owners shared how they reward customers for repeat quilts, and referrals. It was interesting and helpful to hear the different methods!
We wrapped up the day by having a discussion about “how to send a quilt home with a customer”. Clean, pethair and odor free no matter what. Clear Plastic bags seem to be the most popular method, with rope handle paper bags being second. Custom tote bags were rejected due to the cost. Plastic bags are available at Cosco, colored lg rope handled bags are available at uline.com, and stick on labels for the bags are available at vistaprint.com or myownlabels.com
