Please, do not confuse functional testing & load testing.

*Functional testing* means working with a *user interface* (UI).
*Load testing* means working with a *traffic* between client and server.

I think, that clicking on OK btn is a working with UI and it does not
generate new traffic (data which should be sent to server).
That's why LoadRunner does not record your clicking on OK btn.
Since it does not affect a traffic, that's correct.

If you want to read additional info on recording of client side activities,
      please read:
LoadRunner - How to record a file saving, performed by user from browser
      page?<http://motevich.blogspot.com/2007/10/loadrunner-download-record-file.html>

If you still want to click on OK btn, you have to use functional testing
      tool, for example QTP.
And you can execute QTP scripts as part of LoadRunner scenario.
      It's described here:
How to execute QTP script from
      LoadRunner?<http://motevich.blogspot.com/2007/11/execute-qtp-script-from-loadrunner.html>

Since you are insistent on recording graphical events versus protocol events, please consider a graphical virtual user.

Yes, you will need one OS instance per virtual user.

Yes, these virtual users will take longer to create and maintain.

Yes, these virtual users cost several orders of magnitude more than their protocol bretheren.

But, you __will__be__able__ to record the press of the OK button. I assume from your asking of this question that these tradeoffs will be acceptable to you and your organization.

Going the GUI vuser route to "push the OK button" is a high price to pay for lack of training and mentoring as once again the tool and infrastructure costs will be several orders of magnitude higher than the funds you would lay out for education on how LR works and assistance through your first couple of projects.

        Hi All,
I have a scenario where I have to load a URL. While
loading Url there is a message box pop-up on which
"ok" needs to be clicked and after that page loads.I
have to measure the page load-time with the handking
        of this message box.

While recording LR doesn't record the action on "ok"
button. How should I be doing this, any help on this
        is greatly appreciated.

        Thanks,

You could have a LR script that opens a QTP script that calls a WR function to find out that there is no freakin message box.

This will be much simpler than learning LR.

Great idea! That way, if QTP fails to identify the box, you still have Loadrunner to fall back on. Wonder if this will cause any overhead that will effect the test? Well, that doesn't matter, you handled the message box and that is all that is important right?

I do not think that using Loadrunner and WinRunner together are going to give you the level of complexity that is needed. You should also add QTP to the mix. You could have a LR script that opens a QTP script that calls a WR function to find out that there is no freakin message box.

This will be much simpler than learning LR.

Just do what it takes to solve the problem - that is
what we expect from our developers. Any overhead
problems can be resolved by buying more hardware -
                          right?

In order to make this work, I think you would need to
use Rational Robot as automated initiator.

Such a simple and elegant solution that came to me
while I was at a "coffee" shop in Amsterdam last
                            weekend.

Overhead is just a scaling problem and we do not worry
about things like that with loadtesting.....

Just do what it takes to solve the problem - that is
what we expect from our developers. Any overhead
problems can be resolved by buying more hardware -
                              right?

Truly this is a vexing problem, one faced by Mercury and now HP with every
release since moving to a virtual user architecture which is based upon
presentation layer protocols. How does one make a call from OSI layer 6
(or lower) to OSI layer 7 to operate an interface element. All of the
acceptable methods dictate a call down the stack or sideways on the stack,
with a return value up the stack. Yet here we have an element which is
problematic to a small piece of the use community of how to operate an
                                                interface element in layer 7.

There are a number of methods to handle this, but clearly making all of your
users Graphical Virtual Users or Citrix virtual Users is the best method to
ensure that your interface element, dialog box, clicking the exit button is
all handled within your script. This assumes that the operation of this
interface element is absolutely critical to the business process and there
is absolutely no other way for the messages associated with the operation of
this element to be represented to the server for processing. There have
been many evolutions of this solution, Astra, ClickNScript, etc... But if
you must have the flexibility to click a dialog box for any app for any
protocol, there is just no substitute for the tried and true Graphical
Virtual User or the Citrix Virtual User.

Yes, making a call from OSI Session or Presentation Layer to the OSI
Application Layer and providing a return code in a negative direction on the
stack. Truly a vexing problem. Who knows what promises the next
                                                technical solution from HP holds?

There is a much more exotic path, fraught with issues, expensive, highly
dependent upon the quality of your staff on the level of success, but when
all elements come together its magical the level of efficiency which can be
obtained in addressing the messages associated with dialog boxes,
application and browser exits and the like. The path begins with hiring for
fundamental knowledge and skills, continues through the education of your

progresses through mentoring on the first couple of projects and a never

just use LR_DISPLAY_MESSAGE to display data or LR_MESSAGE_DIALOG if you need to enter information to the vusers during the test run.

and since these functions do not exist you will need to write them.

just use LR_DISPLAY_MESSAGE to display data or LR_MESSAGE_DIALOG if you need to enter information to the vusers during the test run.

and since these functions do not exist you will need to write them.
