      Greetings

Those of you who are very experienced may know this already.  Last Christmas I set up a Lionel Display Train at my house.  I pulled out an old power clip on, a bit rusty but looked fine.  I hooked it up.

I ran the train and left it running to go get something.  When I returned, I detected a strong smell of hot plastic in the room.  Checking the transformer, train and other items, I finally found the culprit.

The rusty power connector had so much resistance, it heated up enough to melt the carpeting underneath it.  I mean melted it to blackness!

Clearly, if this had been left for longer, a fire may have started.

TIP  do not use rusted power clip ons.  Ever.

Not only will the trains run slower, a real bummer.  But the fire you start may destroy your collection.

Thanks for the warning, but to get hot like this I would think that there was also a short going on somewhere. John ( Ski) Warren Visit:

Not necessarily. Continued arcing, perhaps due to a rusty intermittent connection can get hot enough to melt a solder joint. In a message dated 7/2/2014

We do electrical testing every day. If you get a high resistance connection it can go into runaway and heat up, catch fire etc. Does not have to short.-TM

In a similar vein, I had a rivet on one of my power contactors loosen up and the resulting poor connection caused it to heat up. Fortunately I noticed the problem before any damage was done. A bit of solder applied to the rivet, top and bottom, took care of the problem. The main symptom which I noticed was that the clip for the wire was slightly loose.

Subject: [Lionel_PostwarTrains] Dangerous!! Rusty Clip On Power Connectors

Funny you should bring up Christmas 'near disasters' Art.  I ran both scales (Lionel and HO) last year, and I normally never leave my trains running without being right there.  Was reading a magazine that just came and happened to look up and notice that my HO was not moving.  Went to lift it off of the tracks and it was really hot.  I mean the wheels were real hot too.  Come to find out that on the opposite side of it, that polyester snow cover for my mountains got picked up in the push-rod.

Let it get real cool, and it runs perfect.  Weird too, since it smelled some.
