        this is a PGP signature.

PGP which stands for Pretty Good Privacy is an encryption protocol,
        encryption or 'tashfeer'.
if you want to send private and secure information you use encryption
to hide the real meaning of the data you are sending.
most methods of encryption are breakable, however there exists a
method called Public Key Cryptography which is probably impossible to
break, PGP is a protocol that implements this technology.

in public key cryptography you have two keys one public which the
whole world can know about, and you have a private key which should be
        a closely guarded secret.
when you want to send a message to someone you use his public key to
encrypt the message with his public key and your private key.
when your friend receives the message he can decrypt it using your
public key and his private key.
how this actually works is beyond me :-)

another added benefit of PGP and public key cryptography is the
ability to sign data, when you sign your messages with your private
key people can use your public key to make sure that the data was not
        corrupted in the way.
since only you have access to the private key it also means that no
one can impersonate you and send messages in your name since they will
        not have a valid signature.

signing is also used with downloads for instance All mandrake updates
are signed, this allows you to check if the file got corrupt while
downloading and to make sure that the RPMs provided are really coming
from Mandrake and hold no malicious code.

and this is the attachment you saw, it is a signature which you can
check the integrity of the message with.

to use PGP you install the program gpg which stand for GNU Privacy
Guard, gpg is the GNU implementation of the PGP protocol.

I hope this explained roughly what the whole thing is about,
encryption is an important technology and its use is going to grow in
the future, it'll do you good to start learning it.

        cheers,
        Alaa

P.S. curious how a public key looks like?? check my public key

              Hi all,

              a small note,

Mohammed mentions various segfaults in katoob, don't get scared the
program is very stable, these segfaults appear when trying to
import invalid and binary files as HTML references.

we are at the stage of testing Katoob in very exceptional conditions
(opening files more than 100 MB, saving to /dev/full etc.)
normally users shall encounter such situations.

Mohammed simply wants to make sure that Katoob is as stable as he can
              make it.

              cheers,
              Alaa
