      Hi All,

I am on to step 10 of the How To Slimserver on Linkstation but have come
      across an error.

I think this tells me that I have correctly made the directory:

      root@LINKSTATION:~# cd /usr/local/
      root@LINKSTATION:/usr/local# ls -l
      total 2
      drwxrwxrwx 11 root root 1024 Aug 26 2003 EPKowa
      drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Nov 13 19:37 slimserver

This is the error I get when I try to un tar:

      root@LINKSTATION:~# cd /
      root@LINKSTATION:/# tar -zxvf Slimserver_v5.3.1.tar usr/local/slimserver
tar (child): Slimserver_v5.3.1.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory

      tar: Child returned status 2
tar: usr/local/slimserver: Not found in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

My Slimserver.tar.gz file is in root as requested:

I'm not a linux expert, but looking into the tar, there is a directory
        SlimServer_v5.3.1

there is no directory slimserver in the tar
try making a directory SlimServer_v5.3.1 instead.

Also, you may to add ".gz" to the file
        tar -zxvf Slimserver_v5.3.1.tar.gz
        instead of
        tar -zxvf Slimserver_v5.3.1.tar

Try extracting slimserver and moving it to the proper location.

          So...

          tar -zxvf SlimServer_v5.3.1.tar.gz

You should now have a SlimServer_v5.3.1 directory, now move the
          directory to /usr/local/slimserver with:

          mv SlimServer_v5.3.1 /usr/local/sliimserver

You should be good to go..

              Thank you Guys,

I have now got it sorted and SlimServer is up and running.

The only thing I am a little uncertain about is that when I run the
./slimserver command from the telenet window, it appears that I have to
keep the telenet session open, If I try to close it then the service stops.

Is there a command that allows me to start the service and then close
              the window?

I found a few errors in the How to and will send a mail to Jamy.

              Best wishes.

              James.

What, if any, difference is there between a)issuing ./slimserver.pl and closing the telnet window; and b) issuing ./slimserver.pl --daemon ? I know that

I know that --daemon makes slim run in the background, would that give
                      it lower priority?

                      which way is recommended?

background and gives your telnet session back.

Running just slimserver.pl leaves it in the forground, and takes over
                        your telnet session.

Either way will let you disconnect and have the slimserver still
running. --daemon uses less memory as your telnet session is not also
                        running.
