      The Onion Rebuffs TV Networks;
      Creates Hilarious Online News Channel

      Jon Stewart better watch out. The Onion News Network is funny, as sharp-witted as "The Colbert Report" and as topical as "The Daily Show." In its first day on the air, the satirical web-based news segments manage to effectively skewer President Bush's troop surge, the immigration debate and American foreign diplomacy.

      WaterGate: Austin TX 2007.03.23
      Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were in town Friday for the release of their papers regarding Mark Felt, the man once known only as Deep Throat and who secretly helped them in uncovering the Watergate abuses. In October 1972 they wrote these words in The Washington Post: "FBI agents have established that the Watergate bugging incident stemmed from a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage conducted on behalf of President Nixon's re-election and directed by officials of the White House and the Committee for the Re-Election of the President." That was the beginning of the end for US Prez Richard Millhouse Nixon. They also talked about what they viewed as more contemporary abuses. DemocracyNow: 2007.02.15 (15 minute excerpt)
      Perhaps no musical act has paid a bigger price for speaking out against war than the Dixie Chicks, the biggest selling female music group of all time and the big winners at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. They have been largely blacklisted since the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003. That's when the group’s lead singer - Natalie Maines - said the group was against the war and ashamed that the President Bush is from Texas. Barbara Kopple joins us to talk about her new documentary, “Shut Up & Sing”, which chronicles the period since.
