      ANNOUNCING ONPOWER.ORG -- A Web Resource for the Study of Government Power

      The Independent Institute is pleased to announce a new website devoted to the nature, growth, and use of government power -- OnPower.org.

      Although organized coercion by government has been studied for millennia, much confusion still exists about its causes and effects. What exactly is the nature of government power, and what are its effects on individual liberty, war and peace, the rule of law, and economic and social welfare? OnPower.org was created to help students, writers, policy-makers, scholars, and the general public arrive at better informed answers to these questions.

      OnPower.org is a one-stop Internet resource featuring a bibliographic compendium of both scholarly and popular works and commentary on the domestic and international effects of national "crises" -- including military crises that have been used to rationalize the growth of the U.S. government. No issue is more central to debates over public policy.

      OnPower.org is organized into three main sections (each with an introductory essay, followed by links to biographical references). These sections include:

      1) Crises and Power (Civil Liberties, Constitution and Bill of Rights, Corporate Welfare, Culture, Defense, Economy, Government Power, Politics, Property Rights);

      2) History (Civil War, Progressive Era, World War I, Great Depression, World War II, Cold War, Gulf Wars, Terrorist War);

      3) Foreign Policy (Blowback, Development and Aid, Intelligence, Interventionism, Non-Interventionism, Protectionism, Regional Influence: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America)

      In addition, OnPower.org features quotations from more than 450 authors, scholars, political leaders, and others, who have proffered insights about government power.

      A project of the Independent Institute's Center on Peace & Liberty, OnPower.org is a work-in-progress that will benefit from your feedback. Please take a look and tell us what you think!
