      Hi Everyone,

      Please excuse cross-posting.

One of my IWE teachers in Japan wrote to me today asking whether I knew
of a website that offers realtime phoning that has a different
configuration---meaning less of a security risk --- from Skype (and
presumably Messenger too. Are there any gurus around please who know of
and can recommend any other reliable _minimal-risk_ telephoning type
service offered online that our students could use for real-time
conferencing please??? Security or fear of a breech of security is a
serious threat to online learning in many universities.

      All suggestions welcome:-)

          Hello Ruth and everyone,

In my university Windows Live Messenger is allowed though Skype is
not. This is because Skype opens several ports at once therefore
increasing both the quality of the communication and the security
risk. WLM is allowed because it only opens one port. I have a
one-to-one class from France with a student in Japan. We use WLM when
I'm at the university and Skype when I'm at home. The quality on Skype
is much better, fewer connection problems and less intrusive ads.

If there's another possibility, I'd be glad to know too.

          Cheers,

I don't know about the state of security, but have found oovoo more
